First Bike need some help.
So i'm in the market for my first motorcycle.. i'm not too sure what to do.. i'm 20 years old and i'm selling my quad because i do not have the time to ride it. i'm also selling the trailer that i used to tow it around with. so all in all i'll probably come out with like $4500 to use for a bike. i know for $5000 i could get a nice used sport bike, is this the route to go? or should i spend like $2000 to get an older one that i'm not so into to learn to ride on.. there's no doubt in my mind that i could learn how to ride just fine on a 600cc sport bike but me and my father have an on going dispute about it so i was thinking about just going for a smaller bike to appease him for 6 months then buying one that i want.. any and all feedback is appreciated.

the only reason i can justify getting a 600cc is because i know someone who wants to sell me a 2005 bike with 800 miles on it for 5 grand.. so it will cost me like $500 out of my pocket, which isn't a big hit.. i'm just not sure, i know i'll have no problem with it at all. i already know how to ride, i've been on my quad for 2 years and rode my uncles honda goldwing before.. the goldwing is a car with 2 wheels, its friggen huge

I say get a sv650s or ninja 650r. Those have a little more power, but are still pretty much universally considered good first bikes and even choice of experienced riders. Ninja 500r and Suzuki GS500 are also good for starters. Lastly the Ninja 250R which you can get brand new for $3k.
Quad and sport bikes are different and riding a bike and owning one are diff too. Not gonna go there though. If you just want to please your father and learn at the same time I say get a ninja 250r. You can get used like $2000 and then sell it back in 6 months for $2250 if you wax it before you sell it. At worse you can sell for what you paid for it unless you mess it up. |

Buddy,
I have 20 years or riding-Racing experience, my best advice to you is first think about what kind of riding you want to do, after you decide definately buy a beater "a bike you won't care about dropping" because you will drop it, is inevitable maybe just once e maybe many times but get something rugged an older 02 03 CBR 600 perfect starter bike this way when you are ready to upgrade to nicer ride in about a 1 or 2 seasons you will have the extra bucks. Get a bike where your feet are planted firmly on the ground no tipping toeing. A good helmet and remember it's not a car and mistakes can cost you your ass. I have lost 3 friends in the 20 years of riding I currently own a 2006 GSXR-1000 and it still scares me sometimes. You are young and the throttle can be addictive and that is ok just control yourself so you can ride another day :) My boy is 7 and I just got him a honda 50 and he is starting to push it and I allow it within reason and I try my hardest to teach him everything I know but he is young and doesn't allways look ahead when he does crazy shit and I don't want him to get hurt, Does your DAD ride? is he scared for you? is he supportive? |

I don't have any experience, but i just love it!! Want to buy one, when i get the chance.. My father is totally against it.. says its for stupid ppl who wants to die..
Well.. I'm on many bike forums, and the first thing they'll tell you is: get a 250, 500 MAX.. if you go any bigger, they will flame you ![]() Better to learn, etc etc.. |

MSF beginner and experienced courses.
Plan on $1k for gear, at minimum armored leather jacket, armored gloves, armored motorcycle boots, and a good helmet. I'd also suggest armored leather pants and/or a suit (Aerostitch Roadcrafter). Either way get your gear. As for a bike, SV650. I wouldn't suggest getting a 600cc sportbike for your first bike, too much plastic for you to damage. The SV650 is best rec I can give you for a first bike. |

I endorse the SV650 as a good first bike, but don't wring the throttle to start off with.. take a safety course, even if you claim to have experience on a quad bike - it's not the same thing... again, be prepared to drop it.. it almost universally happens. Be careful and good luck!

Lots of good advice. If I were 20, I would call my insurance company and see how much they want for different bikes. Many go by engine size. I assume you don't want to pay too much for insurance. It doesn't matter much for my age bracket anymore but I remember when over 600ccs made a big difference. As for what to buy, buy what you like.
