State Trooper

I have a quick question for the fellow police officer, state troopers if we have any.

Can a State Trooper pull you over after they passed their state line?
I guess i was speeding just a little bit while heading to work and i noticed that a ST was behind me and turn on their lights and siren and pull me over Then i noticed that when i pull over i had passed the state line.

Can they give you a ticket? Warning? Suggestions?

By the way i got away with a warning. I pull my military card out and got me out of it.

It all depends on the state and the way they work their mutual aid agreement is setup. In MD if a pursuit originates in the state and it looks like it will continue to the next state then they call ahead to notify. As far as a ticket goes if they are sitting that close to the state line and the infarction occurred in their state and you happen to pull over in another state then yes they can still write you because the ticket is for where the offense occurred. Hope that helps. BTW I obviously work in MD so check your local laws

YES they can.

your infraction was in his state, adn youll notice on the ticket when it says location, it is where the infraction was made.

They do not have immediate jurisdiction but they radio ahead to get an OK from the newly entered territory.

In most cases, jurisdictions share a set amount of highway. For example, I live in VA, and a VA Trooper could clock you in VA and then pull you over in the next state if he/she is within a set distance of their jurisdictional boundary. Lets say its 5 miles into the neighboring state. That would mean the Trooper has 5 miles once he/she crosses the border, to pull you. If he/she thinks they will need more than that distance, they normally notify the next state. Otherwise, if they are within the allowed distance, they really can just process the stop under their own terms without notifying the new state because the infraction occurred within their jurisdiction. As someone said, the location of the stop is not important, its the location of the infraction.
