Presentations
I hate giving presentations. I’m just not a natural at it like others. I always get nervous no matter how prepared I am, and I don’t understand it. Immediately after I begin, I’m fine, but building up to it, I’m a nervous wreck.
Tomorrow I have to give one to the President & VP of my company’s branch here at NASA. I’ve had the presentation ready for a while, but whenever I go over it to myself I stumble my thoughts. I just work myself up for no reason…and yet there’s nothing I can do to keep from feeling nervous. Last year when I had to do this I took a xanex left over from my girlfriend's surgery. I still felt nervous...but was floating on air, lol. |

Well, there's some signs that you're human.
Everyone will get nervous one way or another. I used to be really nervous about it till I took a course this year were we had to do presentations every week. It started becoming more natural. The more you do it, the easier and better it gets.

Yea dude. Don't sweat it. Just think about it though. Even the most prepared and experienced people still get nervous before giving speeches. It's rare that people don't. So as long as you can realize that no one is perfect and blah blah, you can relax and do your thing. It's all about comfort and confidence. You might wanna check out some classes offered by the gov't on presentations. I work for the Navy and took a class on it, and I feel at least 3.6x better than I used to feel about giving speeches.
No pressure. Think about it. Only half (if that) of the people there are actually listening! Good luck! |

As for presentations, yeah we all get nervous. However, the feeling after giving a successful presentation is quite rewarding |

I have to present on what I’ve done this co-op semester. I can sit down and explain to my bosses all day long what I’m doing, and the reasons, approach, etc, etc, but something about giving it in front of the people who will hire/fire me is nerve racking. I’ve gotten very positive feedback from the teams I’ve worked for, and 2 supervisors from different divisions have sent an e-mail to the Director praising my work. It’s not so much the material, it’s just the thought. My nerves make me forget everything I otherwise know like the back of my hand.

I give presentations to various groups (from staff level to VP level) multiple times per month. Regardless of how long I have been doing presentations, or how many I have given, I still get a bit edgy before each one.
Years ago I would never have thought I would be 'good' at public speaking, now I am am requested by various groups in our company to come speak on a regular basis. Even being considered an 'excellent' presenter/public speaker does not mean you can't still be a bit edgy in the lead up. I gave up hoping that I would 'get used to it' years ago. Its just something I live with.

I used to get nervous about things like that, but then I realized the only bad thing about the presentation was always just the nervous feeling I had beforehand - the actual presentation always went pretty good. So I just say f it and do them. Kind of like a "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself" thing.
Just don't build it up in your head as a negative thing, be positive about it |
