I found this somewhere:
Subject: FW: Don't pump gas May 15th 2007 NO GAS...On May 15th 2007 Don't pump gas on may 15th In April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest of gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight. On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most places. There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network, and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up. If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companies pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May 15th and let's try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at least one day. If you agree (which I can't see why you wouldn't) resend this to all your contact list. With it saying, "Don't pump gas on May 15th" |

It's not going to take "$3 billion" out of the pockets of the oil companies... they're going to just sell more gas on the day before and after May 15th... I always laugh at the idiocy of these things... I'll pump gas when I need it, end of story. Gas prices are what they are, so either quit complaining or quit driving.

Economically, it is really stupid. My econ teacher from last year even told me that this would do nothing but increase the demand the next day, thus raising prices throughout the day which would more than make up for the "loss" on the 15th. One day won't destroy an oil company. Besides, we consume more oil for producing useable electricity than we do for transporation. Anyone who made this up has very immature/undeveloped reasoning.

It's supply and demand, a boycott isn't going to do anything worthwhile. Even if they drop the prices from it we'll just keep using gas as selfishly as we already do until it runs out. We pay the least of any importing country as far as gas as concerned and everyone still complains about it.
Not to mention everyone not getting gas for one day will do nothing. Sure there are 73,000,000 Americans on the internet, but not all 73 million of them are going to be needing gas on May 15th. Maybe 10%, not all 73 million people would have been going to get gas anyways. So they will lose 10% of their sales, only from the United States for that day alone. I'm sure they have enough money to support themselves for that day, long enough to wait until everyone who didn't go on the 15th, will have to get gas. There is nothing you can do against increased gas prices, save for discovering a crap load of oil in your backyard, or getting the government to remove the taxes on it. |

The best way to reduce gas prices is to drive an economical, gas efficient car like we all do on this forum. This way, we are giving them less money yet achieving the same utility (I.E transportation), thus lowering the demand for gas quickly following a decrease in price. Sorry, but that's the only. Milfs, leave your gas guzzling SUV's at home and take a ride with the sexy neighborhood teenager in his civic :)

Yea, I don't see how 1 day will change anything... There's enough demand for fuel by the service industry that us "common folk" not pumping gas will do nothing. Just think of every 18-wheeler holding 200 gallons of fuel in their tanks. Or any kind of truck with a company's name on the side of it for that matter. Where I work our service hands put nearly $70~80 worth of fuel in their trucks daily.. I have 35 trucks on my file that are out on duty right now... I'm sure there's no way they cannot fuel up on may 15. just my .02 |
