St. Louis Police Officer Recovering After Downtown Shooting

(KSDK) - A St. Louis Police Officer has been upgraded to stable condition after the police car he was in was rammed by another driver Friday night. While police have not identified the officer, they say the five-year veteran is 36 years old and was seriously injured when his legs were pinned in the crash.

Police shot and killed the driver, Mohammad Khaled Alwadi, 21, of Jordan, after he allegedly ran away from the scene and fired several shots at officers. Police say a 45-caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.

Police also diverted traffic downtown while they searched parking garages for a second gunman. But in a statement Saturday, police said there was no second suspect. Initially Friday night, police believed a second gunman ran away from the scene of the crash at Pine and Memorial Drive, and was hiding somewhere downtown. Police abandoned their search shortly after midnight.

Saturday, police said Alwadi spoke to relatives of committing suicide just before ramming the police cruiser. Police say Alwadi had no criminal history. Reached by telephone, Alwadi's brother, Riyad, said anyone who knows Mohammad is not able to imagine that he would do this. A family friend says Alwadi was visiting his brother and father in St. Louis and had been in this area for about three weeks.

Sorry to hear about that Kyle, I hope the officer does well in rehab and recovers fully.

it looks like he is gonna be ok for the most part. My concern is that his legs were pinned between the two vehicles.

hey, btw..hows that cop you had to fill in for? the one when you were on your day off, and your sgt called you in cause he got hurt in a foot chase?

hes still on desk duty

when he took the suspect down he dislocated his shoulder. in the process he got a torn rotator cuff and some nerve damage. but he is expected to recover 100%
