"Hands on" - –adjective
1. characterized by or involved in active personal participation in an activity; individual and direct: ex) a workshop to give children hands-on experience with computers. 2. requiring manual operation, control, adjustment, or the like; not automatic or computerized: ex) The hands-on telephone switchboard is almost obsolete. (dictionary.com) Mechanical Engineering, i am in my first undergrad year, kinda sucks for now, but i have heard it gets a lot better and more "hands on". and i am going to pursue Automotive Engineering for my masters. We are also just getting into drafting and Computer Aided Design, pretty fun stuff Last edited by j'sFG2; 04-14-2007 at 01:29 AM. |

On topic: Do something you are interested in as far as major. I was not inferring that you need to make a fat stack...A college degree (in whatever major is a +). I have a history degree (some would say useless). I make a good wage and have a good job (totally unrelated to my degree, but needed a degree to get said job)...I enjoyed history, so I majored i it...

Chemical Engineering. It's a curriculum I can get passionate about. I actually look forward to large projects and such. It's not for everyone, but I'd suggest looking into it.

I switched from Computer Science to Electrical Engineering in my 2nd year, since taking an electronics class and loving it. I currently work in the EE field, and boy is the pay nice. And it is so fun, too. Lots of hands on with electronics.
Don't do computer engineering.. You will have a lot more opportunities with Electrical Engineering (including computer engineering jobs). There are many fields under electrical engineering, and here are some: * Radio Frequency * Communications (like wireless, wired) * Digital Signal Processing * Control Systems * Power * Integrated Circuit Design * General electronics Last edited by stevesivic; 04-14-2007 at 02:02 AM. |

Do you like biology? My major is bio and in the two years I've been in college so far, I've learned that biology is an all-encompassing subject in a sense. For example, my ecology and evolution prof. was a computer engineer and he did some model analysis stuff that dealt with population genetics. there's bio-mechanics (like that crazy stuff you can see on discovery channel) and I have heard of many mathematicians in the field (though haven't had any as professors yet).
I don't know what type of "hands on" you're looking for but I think bio can be pretty hands on, albeit not in the mechanical sense, but who knows, you can make it mechanical if you want lol. |

Neuropsychopharmacology
The ins and outs of neurotransmission within the brain and how various psychoactive substances, drugs, and pharmaceuticals as well as endogenous chemicals act on it. You could be a researcher in private or in a university, you could work for a pharm company, you could work for various government agencies (maybe even the DEA, yikes!!), you could work in hospital, you could write, you could teach, and then you could specialize in the brain's basic function, or abnormal function, or functional impairment such as aging or Alzheimer's or retardation or stroke or depression or psychosis, or you could look at the effects of existing legal or illegal drugs, you could be a "wildcatter" and find experimental/new herbs and plants and study their effects on the brain, you could focus on psychedelic drug therapy, etc. |
