Best Overlooked Movies Thread

Okay... So there are tons of great movies out there that were never hyped or missed a big audience. If you know of a great movie that most people have never heard of... throw it up here...

Heres one you MUST see if you never saw it....

Bubba Ho-Tep.
Elvis and a Black JFK fight a mummy in a retirement home....

If you're a fan of Army of Darkness, Evil Dead movies.... you'll love Bruce Campbell in this.. and a "Black John F Kennedy"? You gotta f'n see that.

Bubba HoTep!? Awesome. I can't believe someone else has heard of it. Check out Boondock Saints. That's another one that's been overlooked. If you can't find it to rent, Circuit City just had it in the $5 bin. It's well worth the extra dollar to buy.

watched crash last week! almost tops motorcycle diaries for my fav movie. it made my girlfriend cry from the scene with the girl running out to protect her dad. she got kinda angry for making her watch it, but for me it was an awesome eye-opening experience.

another movie that is supposed to be equally as good from what netflix says is "11:14". idk, it should be arriving tomorrow.

I had actually heard about "Crash" while it was in its theatrical run, but because of school and work and such, I decided to catch it on DVD. I thought it was a very good movie and very real in depicting race relations in the Los Angeles area; a lot of the dialogue seemed to be "saying what people think, but were to afraid to say it." I'm from the Bay Area, personally, but in terms of the multi-ethnic population, it's pretty similar to Los Angeles. Great movie.

Bubba Ho-Tep is definitely an overlooked gem. You couldn't really classify this as overlooked but The Fifth Element is a fun little popcorn sci-fi romp that amazingly few have seen.

Speaking of the Fifth Element, the director, Luc Besson, is highly overlooked. I'm sure all of you have seen The Professional, but I urge you to see the longer International version. Much better. His use of lighting is brilliant.
I also agree that Requiem is a great movie. And Reservoir Dogs? Tarantino is my God. For those that don't know, Tarantino sold Natural Born Killers and True Romance to raise the money to make RD. Check out True Romance if you haven't seen it. I could go on for days (I lectured two 90 minute classes on Tarantino).

Right you are. I haven't seen all of Luc Besson's work but the International version is much better. Doesn't it also sell as Leon: The Professional? And Tarantino is good. He's a different breed but he's still a good writer/filmmaker.

Almost forgot: Casablanca. Everyone knows the lines, but very few under the age of 50 have seen it. This should be required for any film class, or for high school students period. After covering WWII they could watch Casablanca followed by Schindler's List. They could learn a lot from two very different films that portray self-sacrifice, love, and the unpleasant side of war. Who knows, you may entertain or bludgeon them into learning something.

Hey... I can't believe I left this out.... Office Space. If you haven't seen this movie and you work in a cubicle... you are missing out. It is hilarious. "PC LOAD LETTER?!? WHAT THE **** IS THAT?" And if you can't seem to bring yourself to go get it.. it has jennifer anniston in it so at least rent it for eye candy... (back when she was young).

• Equilibrium - 1984 meets, THX1138, meets the Matix
• Donnie Darko - near cult status, largely unknown due to release date (9/11)
• Primer - Film festival award winner, brain teaser on time travel, chaos, and paradox
• Riding Bean - If you like cars and anime, this one is for you
• The Red Violin - Folks either know this one, or have no clue.

Clerks, Mall Rats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma(if you haven't seen it a billion times on COmedy Central) are all good movies that weren't really too popular in their times. I thought they were all hilarious.

My only problem with Donnie Darko is that it was completely elusive if you haven't gone to the website for an explanation of all the water medium for time travel paradox stuff. Unless that is supposed to be common knowledge... I personnally was lost. I thoroughly enjoyed it though.

^^I think that's the best part of the movie...that it's interactive. Even if you just have a TV and a DVD player and no computer, it makes you think. You have to think about it and it makes you want to talk about it with other people. It's not just Dumb and Dumberer.
