Thumbs up 8th Civic Musician's Corner

Any of you guys make music out here?

Personally, I make beats, sample-based production. A turntable and old vinyl is all I need . I love jazz/soul/fusion inspired beats, in the essence of Pete Rock, MF Doom, Count Bass D, the late J Dilla, etc... I don't mimic their style, rather take on my own, but they are major influences in my life, sonically and otherwise. I'd love to hear what some of you guys make, whether it be live instruments, sampled beats, hyphy, or even the sitar so post up some music/myspace links and let's hear it!

Here is where you can hear a fellow 8th gen's beats [no rhymes]...

www.myspace.com/r0ughian

This is a fantastic hobby too, not only do I love to make beats, it pays quite nicely !

Here's some pictures of my setup, very minimalistic, but I love it!

Roland SP-404 and Nu-mark TT200...

DJ setup, plus those Alesis M1 Monitors [amazing sound!]

My daughter takes drum lessons--does that count. The guy that teaches her was a session drummer with KISS and also played with WASP and Poison. My oldest plays violin, viola, and a little guitar.

This is a good hobby, but you should note that it is an *expensive hobby*... just so some of the younger guys around here don't get the idea that they can all afford equipment like in your setup
Thanks for sharing

Ironically enough, I'm only 16

I work hard for all of my stuff, all of that right there is my hard earned dollars from a job that I love. My grandma did happen to help me out with my civic, that which I am really grateful for. A good job + saving up money + making nearly a grand per beat [selling to rappers] = :) And a very nice grandma helps out too... haha.

My mentality is this... when you are just given stuff immediately without having to spend your own money on it, you seem to take it for granted. With that said, I'd rather wait months to get something that I actually worked for, than to get it immediately free of charge. Not to say I don't like free things though... you heard... lol.

Believe what you'd like, I'm not trying to prove anything

But as far as for what is on that table...

$600 for the Alesis Monitors
$560 for turntables
$90 for mixer
$400 for sampler
$20 for cables

All in all, ~1700USD . 2 months pay. Ain't no thang.

The Shipping Store in The Woodlands, Texas. Essentially, I pack up boxes, help out customers, process packages, etc...

8.25 an hour. Work Monday through Friday 2-6 and Saturdays 9-3. Full time during the summer [9-6 m-f, 9-3 sat.] and winter breaks. Paid every two weeks. Blessed with a great job.

edit: Keep in mind that I also sell beats. It's very sporadic (otherwise I wouldn't really have the need for a job, haha) but when I do, it's anywhere from 400-1000 depending on the scale of the project/album, how much I can pump out of the artist ( ), label costs, etc...
