Try both and see what you like...I'm inclined to believe the difference would be minimal, probably amounts to a personal preference. IIRC the progressive scan is better for moving images...?

720P is higher resolution then 1080i, due to the fact that 1080i is interlaced. Although 1080P (progressive) is twice the resolution of 720P. It depends on size of the TV and distance from the TV if you can really notice a difference between any of the HD resolutions. 42" plasma from 10 feet will look the same for any of the resolutions for example.

We prefer 720p over 1080i, on this set (I think it's a JVC).

"ear projection", huh? Wow, whose ear did they use? Is it another one of those Wendy's "finger in my chili" cases? I'm only kidding.

You can get the Sony 40" XBR Wega Plasma with 1080p for under 3 grand. I'm still debating on whether or not i want to get that. I currently have the Panasonic 42" plasma. Only reason why I'm thinking about the 1080p is because I picked up the HD-DVD adapter for the xbox. HD movies look awesome!

Oops back on topic. I have mine set at 1080i and I think it looks fine.

I did a lot of research on that topic. What it comes down to, really is preference.

That said, 720p is a lot better for game that have a lot of movement; motion will be sharper and there will be no trails. If you are playing games that don't have too much going on on the screen, 1080i may be worth checkin out. As most of you already know, 720p is progressive meaning that it outputs a complete frame at any given time. On the other hand, 1080i - while having a larger resolution - only outputs half of a frame at any given time due to interlacing. Interlaced meaning that in a sense, it outputs the odd lines on one refresh and then the even lines on the next.

Also I've heard that most games on the 360 (at least up to now) have been designed for 720p resolutions. Therefore, if you are running at 1080i, not only are you getting a bit of motion trails due to the interlacing, but also using extra CPU to upscale the original resolution. Don't know about the PS3 though. Hope that helps...

I own a DLP (56") and four LCDs. I cannot distinct the different among 1080i, 720p and 1080P. I use Xbox 360 add-on for HD-DVD player and COX cable cards to receive HD channels. Here is my conclusion- w/ proper viewing distance the above resolutions are barely any differences..!

^gee I wonder if that's because you have a DLP and 4 LCD's. Maybe if you had something that wasn't fixed pixel, you might be able to see the difference.

Truth of the matter is, it depends on your TV, not the resolution. Some TV's are designed to run better off of 1080i vs. 720p signal. You just have to hook it up and try. If you can't see the difference then either your TV looks like ass at all times so whats it matter (DLP!) or you haven't calibrated your TV to actually show what it's true potential is.

I really hope you're not saying that HD DVD looks better than BD. Hope you enjoy your BetaMax player because HD DVD will go the way of the Dodo bird. Need proof? Look it up. BD is outselling HD DVD 2-1 in terms of media and HD had more titles out as of a month ago. I'll stick with technology, I'll stick with Blu-ray as a winner. But honestly, I'm not going to buy into either until there's a clear-cut winner (aka the other camp gives up and shuts down) and more quality movies come out. I already have a real dvd player therefore there's no need to upgrade. I've A-B'd my player against HD DVD (Toshiba XA-1) playing an HD disc and my Denon looked better on standard def DVD. Quality once, never buy again.

For X360, most games default to 720p. And 1080p is not twice the resolution of 720p. 720p = 1260x720; 1080p = 1920x1080.

Honestly, it's not much of a difference. As for 1080p, very few BD-DVDs or HD-DVDs would really take advantage of it right now, since we're still in first-gen. Later on w/ better transfer you'd start noticing a difference. As for the BD-DVD/HD-DVD battle, BD-DVD will eventually win out. BD format has more exclusive companies signed on, and there's a continual shift towards it. That said, in the near future it won't matter much since discs often are playable on both formats.

As for the DLP vs. Plasma vs. LCD debate, LCD so far looks like it's going to take over. Plasma's getting better, but DLP seems to be lagging behind, literally (impossible to play games on those things with the lag). I'm kinda hoping thin CRT's from Samsung will take over, but who knows how consumers will embrace that technology.

By breaking into the service menu and using a calibration DVD.

See this link and the first review (Kevin White): http://www.amazon.com/SONY-KV-20FV30...009455-7467047

That's just for that TV, but it gives a good example.

There are HUNDREDS of settings...
