Which place would you live?

Well, the time has come that I will need to be making a decsion on where to move to. I currently live in SoCal and housing costs here are insane! If you didn't buy 10 years ago you will never buy here, unless you make in excess of 100k a year (no, I'm not exagerating).

I will have a downpayment for a house and can move to the following (as I can trasfer with my company to these places):

Tempe, AZ
Dallas, TX
Chicago, IL
Albany, NY
Somewhere, NJ
Clearwater, FL
Somewhere, VA
Atlanta, GA

I'm sort of leaning toward NY right now as I love to travel to Europe and flights from there would be cheap...All the above places housing is dirt cheap compared to SoCal so thats not an issue. I would like to hear from people who have visited/live in these locations.

Thanks for the info all.

Tempe is nice, if you can afford to run your AC during the summer (AZ power rates are 3X what I pay here per KW hour...) Crazy.

Atlanta is pretty nice, we get good overall climate. But we rarely ever get snow. TRAFFIC IS A BITCH! One of the worst I believe. The communities are usually pretty good. Not too much to do around here but its pretty quiet. So keep that in mind.

I worked in dallas for 6 months when I was 21. I agree about the women there. Although I didnt save any money, It all went back to the nightlife of dfw. It was very cool and alot of fun. If you go there you better learn spanish (no offense). Alot of people that dont speak english. Although dallas itself isnt what Id call the perfect place, Maybee an outskirt, But ill guesse the rent and living is pretty high when you get a nice area. I think texas also has yearly smog inspections.

i came here to the dc area from the bay area three years ago. i want to say the housing here is just about the same as living in cali but at least the economy here is more stable. as far as weather i love the fall and spring, summer could get rough with the humdity, and snow could suck in the winter time. traffice does suck from time to time... yearly emissions testing and safety inspections every two years.

AZ. Coming from Slowcal you don't want too much of a culture shock. I have lived in Dallas for all of my life with a brief stint in the Seattle area.

That's not too bad. I assume I could get a small house there for 250k. A 4 bedroom 3 1/2 bath here would range from 750k-1 million

For 250,000 here you could live on the hill in a huge house. But were not on the list. And o yeah, The economy sucks. Try to find a job over 10-12 bucks an hour and youll be lookin for a long while. But there is good news... no emissions testing or inspections.

i lived in Chicago, as I did in Clearwater. Chicago is expensive, I'd say Clearwater imo. Nice place, its a semi-metro area with tampa and everything, but its not huge. You also have Disney/Universal close by. Plus, you gotta love that southern weather

Virginia is decent. It is a pretty nice state. It's a pretty diverse state geographically. Not so much culturally though. Climate varies a lot and changes pretty quickly. There is a saying in Richmond, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes." Virginia is a quieter state than what you are used to though, for better and worse. My sister lives in ATL. Pretty nice city, but traffic is a pain there too. You can find reasonably priced housing if you look though.

If you don't like traffic that also rules out Chicago. Chicago is a terrible city for driving. Absolutely terrible. If you want me to list all the reasons I can, they are extensive. Also you are from SoCal, so the climate change may be pretty intense for you. Housing in Chicago isn't cheap either...

It's not a bad city though, lots to do, I just don't adore living right smack in a big city.

I'm surprised traffic is such a big deal for you though, heh. From what I know of SoCal it is pretty bad there. The only consolation you get is nice weather to be stuck in.

How did you come to narrow it down to those choices?
