You're only supposed to salute officers... But there is nothing saying you cannot salute enlisted. When I have reason to, I will salute fellow enlisted folk. O=)

Besides, my bad eyes without my glasses can barely see his rank. =P

No.. You can't salute enlisted

Enlisted personnel salute all officers, and officers salute their seniors. Salutes are returned by persons saluted except when they are uncovered—the person saluted should acknowledge the salute with an appropriate greeting or a nod of the head.

Saluting is an honor reserved for Officers of the branches, most NCO's would probably not see it as you trying to show respect, but more of you not understanding their position in the military. My suggestion would be you show your understanding of military rules and traditions by not saluting, but by standing at parade rest when addressing an NCO, lest he advise you otherwise, this is a way to demonstrate your respect to an NCO.

Ever heard the term, "When in doubt, whip it out..." applied to the military? If you cannot specifically notice an officer rank, which can be a pain at time with how subdued ranks are, there is nothing wrong with saluting, even if it was actually an NCO. That's how it was taught to many in basic training. There have been times where I came across a few Army people and well, I did not have my glassed on, so I saluted them. They didn't mind.

On another occasion, I accidentally passed by a Naval officer, and their rank pins on their service caps are rather small... He attempted to rip my ass for not saluting, so I began with apologizing for not noticing and gave my salute. All was well.

I know of standing at parade rest for NCOs, I was only stating that it doesn't hurt to salute. the only occasions where I have saluted NCOs were by mistake or those who I've known for a while. In all other cases, parade rest was used. O=)
