$500 fee? For what? I buy new phones out of contract all the time, but you just have to pay the full retail price. I've never seen a standard cell phone go for $500, most I paid was about $450 the the Moto Q (which sucked). If you're looking into any motorola phone, if you go to there website you can buy all of their models without contracts, you'll pay about the same price as you would in the store but sometimes they have little deals. To get the best prices out of a contract you'll need to find someone selling one personally, eBay or maybe Amazon.

I was in this same position. I didn't want to spend alot of money to replace my broken phone so I found my old phone from like 5 years ago and i'm just going to use that until I am eligible to get a new phone.

Yeah it's not a fee really. The cellphone companies discount the phones ( a lot in some cases) when you agree to pay them for 24 months of service 'cause they will make it up and then some. If you don't want to agree to that contract then they won't give you the discount, and you're subjected to paying the full MSRP on the phone.

If you're going from a Razr to the Q, I'd consider it some more. First you will need a data plan. Everything you do on that phone uses data instead of minutes. Don't even think about using Internet Explorer on it without a data plan. First month I had the phone I got $180 worth of data charges from only using the web for maybe 20 minutes total for the month. This also included browsing software catalogs, downloading any new applications etc. Second month, after seeing the bill, I stopped using IE on it, and still they came up with a way to charge me another $120 for data usage on the phone. Not to mention it's pretty bland as a smart phone. It's PDA like features are slim and none. It's intended to rival Blackberrys with simple out of the office email and other simple things like that.

If you're looking for a new phone, the LG 8600 is very nice, out of contract it's around $250. I had it for a few months and then I was eligible for an upgrade, and since I'm a cell phone whore I used it on the white Moto krzr. Both good phones, going from a razr to the krzr would kinda pointless, unless you like the interface on the razr becaue essentially they are the same phone.

Wow I ramble a lot.

well first off I WOULD NOT recommend motorola.. they have pretty phones with predating software which has serious issues .. at least even if you get a nokia with an old looking interface it will work 100% of the time..
I would recommend waiting out your contract.. or telling them that you have had your phone stolen.. and well cingular lets you sign a 2 year contract from the time of your call w/ a 1 yr discounted price if you do not have insurance.. just a little fyi...
as far as the Q is concearned it does run windows mobile smartphone.. but it still uses the same processor chip as the rest of the damn motos and runs into problems... if you want something around the same build.. go for a blackberry or a treo.. but it depends what you're gonna use your phone for.. and what you need it for.. and if you really think you're gonna use it to replace your ipod THINK AGAIN.. because the headphones suck unless you get a really nice set of bluetooth headphones.. anyways.. what are you gonna use your phone for or do you just think that the Q looks nice?
tell me what you need in a phone.. and I'll tell you what to get ;].. cell phone brands make a big diff.. I've been through roughly 6 phones in the past year and finally found the one I like.. not 100%.. but its good enough for now ;]
