Dad's vehicle got broken into :-(

My father and my mother we in downtown St. Louis for my cousin's wedding. I was unable to attend because of my current injury situation (http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26238). The wedding was saturday evening and my parents stayed in the Hilton hotel. My dad's Ford Excursion (7.3L turbo diesel) was parked in the Hilton parking garage. They stayed the night downtown because there was a family brunch in the morning and they didnt want to have to drive downtown again in the morning. My father got to his truck this morning(sunday) and found the rear window broken out. My dad's first concern was he conceal carry weapon (i think it was his 1911 ported v10 pistol) that he keeps in the center council. Luckily, he felt uneasy about leaving it in the council and he had hid underneath the council(somehow, i havnt seen where). The criminal(s) stole several thing, Garmin Navi unit valued around $600. 2 magazines for his piston valued at $70-$80 a piece. They had grabbed his surefire tacktical flashlight that is valued at $300 but they didnt know how to turn it on and obviously didnt know what it was and how much it was worth and they left it in the back seat. We think they were looking for the pistol after they found the magazines and the holster for it, but luckily for financial and safetly purpouses they never found it. They also took his Palm Pilot, Sony digital camera valued at approx $300. Two sony pro duo 2gb memory sticks. It appears they tried to steal the truck but couldnt get it to start. With this diesil truck you have to turn the key on and wait for a light to go off on the dash before you can start it, i guess they didnt know to wait and they couldnt get it to start so they left it.

Here is what is messed up the most. The garage only has one entrance and one exit, which are guarded by security guards 24hours a day. Now, this was probably someone on foot with no vehicle inside of the garage, now how did the suspect get in and out of the garage without the guard noticing?!?! sounds like the guard is in on it to me.

Someone had reported it because the police had left a note on the truck with a report number and a phone number to call to report everything that was missing. Hopefully his insurence will pony up and replace everything. Im just glad that his gun isnt out on the streets of STL right now. Dad is now looking into a lockbox to put in his truck to leave all the valuable in. Im also going to get one to put in the trunk because, as an officer, i always have a pistol on me or in my civic.

everyone, keep everything out of plain view inside of your vehicles. My dads mistake was that he left his portable GPS mounted to the dash of his truck and im sure thats why they broke in. Kepp everything out of view, keeps honest poeple honest, and makes criminals think that you may not have anything and its not worth the attemp, in most cases...

That really sucks, Kyle.

I hope your family's luck makes a turn for the better soon.

Damn, homie...you just ain't havin a lot of luck.

I'm wondering, is there anyway into the garage from the hotel? I know you said one entrance and one exit and in Montreal, there's a hotel we stayed at that only had one entrance and one exit, but you could get to and from the hotel through the parking garage. It sounds like maybe they went down and came back up the same way.

Insurance generally does not cover vehicle contents (I work in insurance). Hopefully, for your dads sake, things are different in MO...Total BS man...I'd say get the f*ck out of St. Louis...

Jeez! Apparently the statistics were right. St. Louis does have the most crime. Crazy!

im not completely sure, but profiling(i know i know) the suspect would lead you to belive they werent in the Hilton hotel late at night... that would be very suspicious

as a family, we generally have very bad luck for some reason.

right now my older brother has 3 broken fingers and a broken heal when a ladder slid out from under him at work and he fell 12ft to the ground last week (2 days before i got stabbed)

we always have stupid stuff hapening to us, last year when i still had my 97 jeep wrangler, someone slashed the platic window (soft top) and stole my Kenwood stereo and about 150-200 cd's, everyone ive ever bought. i hated that jeep since the day i got it, lol

well the garmin GPS was attached to the vehicle, the power adapter was hardwired to the battery and it had a stand that was attached to the dash(i installed it for him). so im hoping since it was actually attached that they will cover it. As far as the digi camera, palm pilot ect, that should be covered by my dad's home owners insurence. they replaced a couple power tools stolen out of his pickup truck a couple years ago.

as far as st. louis goes... its pretty bad when you are constantly on a state of alert around here. I mean, i am as an officer always, but most people fear for there life when it gets dark downtown

This is a good reminder to everyone here to make sure you take with you what you don't want stolen in your vehicle.

If you can't take it or hide it, put it in the trunk. Leaving ANYTHING in your vehicle, even pennies, is just an invitation for theft.

Be smart, and put your stuff in your house/apartment if it doesnt need to be in your car, or lock it in your trunk out of sight. Also, this may seem obvious, but the majority of car thefts are from vehicles left unlocked or running. DON'T DO IT! :)

Glad to see you're functioning!

My garage port in the apartment complex got raided Sat morning. The car right next to me had its door sheet metal ripped on around the key lock. The car behind me and to the left had its driver's side window broken. My car was in between the two, but unscathed.

I *always* keep everything out of sight. Can't be too paranoid in Oakland, I tell ya.

Cripes, Kyle, gold plated magazines?!?! 1911 magazines don't cost anywhere near that much unless he had comp/weighted mags custom mags (eg, IPSC comp mags).

all i know is that they are some kind of speed mag, my dad didnt get into detail. knowing him, they were probably the best ones you can buy. when it comes to guns, he spares no expense.

he put new sights on my Springfield X-D(.357 Sig) and wouldnt let me pay for them, i later found out that the sights were like ~$200. they are amazing sights and they also have this paint on them that is radioactive never stops glowing. they even glow in the middle of the day, there beautiful.

but yeah, im not sure exactly what kind of mag they were, but what i understand they were really nice.

Damn, Kyle...sorry to learn about all the misfortunes you and your family have. Hopefully things will turn around for the better sooner rather than later. Keeping you in my prayers.
