I started off as Phone support for an internet provider, then moved on to a PC Tech, and now I am a Senior Network Engineer at a local Health System here. I have no college degree. If you can learn fast and accelerate and motivate yourself well, there is no end to where you can go. Certifications can help, but knowledge is better then those, some people have certs but can't do anything at all when it comes to practical knowledge.

Good luck to you, and yes, hook us up with FREE STUFF :)

well...from this search ERT = Easy Residential Technician. Which kinda makes sense since Staples has that big red button.

lol...deals...yeah, a group buy on some office supplies? :) j/k

Circuit City has FireDog, Staples has their ERT's, BestBuy has their GeekSquad... What to look for?

All of these value added service groups are looking for peeps to fill into low paying jobs and some minor certifications; typically the A+/Network+ certifications. Anything more than that, and they can't pay what that type of person is really worth.

If you continue on with this as a career, you should look into the MCSE/CCNA/CCNE certifications. But, you probably already knew this.

I would have suggested a few schools to attend, but the ones that counted no longer exist, since they were privately owned.

Take the position, stick with it for at least 6 months, add it to your resume and move on. Can't buy all the toys you want with only the money that they think you deserve; probably a reason why those outfits can't seem to hold onto good people for too long, and why the turnover rates seems a little high for a technical support service.

YMMV

Working for a place like Staples doesn't exactly require the most skill or knowledge in the world, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just absorb everything they teach you and you'll be fine. As long as you're even slightly acclimated to technology you shouldn't have a problem. FWIW I started just messing around with computers when I was young, got a job as tech support for an ISP out of college, now I work for a bank doing everything from helpdesk, to desktop, to sys admin stuff.

I worked as a computer tech on a college campus for 4 years while I went through school.

It's a cool job...glad to hear you're not doing it for the rest of your life, though. I now completely understand why computer techs are so bitter and impatient with the regular folk that call in for help.

You should pick up some great problem-solving skills doing that. I'm a programmer and love everything tech-related.
(BTW I'm doing consultant work in your area near the corner of Aptakisic and Weiland)
