My First ticket with the SI, should I go to Court?

Hello, well it happened tonight, naturally when I was not even meaning to speed, I got pulled over by the coppers and was given a ticket for 40 in a 25. The road is a new road here in town that I thought was 30-35 mph road, but was not sure, until after I saw the cop and was scanning for speed limit signs. The cop actually told me that if I would have slammed on the brakes when I first saw him I would have not gotten a ticket and he would have not stopped me, but because all I did was let off the gas he stopped me... what the heck is that suppose to mean? I guess If I look guilty he gives you a pass? Maybe next time I will SLAMMM on the brakes and put the car on it's nose :)

So anyways haven't have a ticket in around ten years, and only two in my lifetime, one for speed and the other for failure to yield. I got this ticket for 166 bucks, and also 4 points off my license. Should I go to court and fight it with the above info I stated? Do I have a chance of accomplishing anything? Can anyone offer me any pointers. I would like to keep my car payment higher then my insurance, and if I could get out of this ticket or at least get it reduced I'd feel a lot better.

Thanks for any help!!

Always go to court. Even if you don't have a lawyer you might get lucky and the cop gets a case of the runs that morning. If you can afford a lawyer I would deff recommend getting one. They can talk to the prosecutors and get a reduced punishment for you. Also like Batang said take a preemptive defensive driving course. This way you will show the court you take this seriously, and it counts as timed served if the judge says you have to take one as part of your punishment. good luck!

well the lawyers down here only charge like $60 to take care of a ticket so i would just call them give him my info and he takes care of it....idk if u have anybody that could do that where u live....ohh yeah he makes sure that i don't have to pay any other fees or fines and i don't get any points on my license either....used him a few times...

slowing down when you see an officer while you are speeding is a sign of respect we look for.

In my experiences though slowing down when you see a cop wont help you with ticketing purposes. Realistically if you aren't around many cars and you are speeding, chances are the minute you see a cop, he has already clocked and made up his mind whether or not he wants to ticket you or not. Sometimes slowing down isnt the best answer depending on the situation, ie. fast moving traffic on a major highway. I dont mean to sound cocky or rude, I am just giving out my point of view. It seems like you yourself are an officer so you would know better than I.

The only problem is that they PAY the cops to show up to the court. I've NEVER had one not show up!

yes they pay us.... half of what we usually get. so in the end, we lose half of a days pay per month :-(... just for traffic offenses. we also have to show up for domestics, homicides(when they hapen, very rare, thankfully) and every other crime that you can think of where the suspect doesnt plead guilty

alllllllsssssoooo... please dont blame the officer for you getting a ticket. we are just normal people, like you, and we hold a job, like you. the best way to get out of a ticket is to be kind and polite to the officer. we dont get that very much, and when we do get someone polite, we take that into consideration very heavily.

there, thats an insider tip... we just dont like being disrespected... no one does

I'm not sure how the American legal system works, but you're paying for court fees regardless of whether you're going or not in Canada. If that's the case, then I see no reason to not fight it.

If you have only had 2 tickets in the last 10 years and 1 of them was speeding, then it'd be worth mentioning.

I always try to be very polite to cops, some of the crap you guys go through, along with not knowing if you are going to get shot at that day is just not cool. I just feel that with my past driving record it was a bit extreme to have 4 points on my license, that's the biggest thing I care about...

I may be beating a dead horse, but...allow me to vent a little. I just found out that my drunk co-worker got pulled over by the cops last night, had expired tags, was drunk and was sliding sideways down the street ( it was a little icy out last night) and they just told him to "go home". what the heck!??

Sorry for the venting, just have no tolerance for Drinking and Driving....

Please pay for your mistake and move on! It doesn't matter what he said and how he stopped you. You are over speed and that all it matter!
