Highway Cameras

I live in southeastern PA, and lately I have noticed a lot of big poles with cameras on them along side of a lot of highways...mostly 202 and Rt 30 Bypass...which make me nervous

I did a little research online and it looks like they are a part of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) which seems to be involved with the digital signs and information devices...and even Homeland Security

A lady also told me that they are used for radar and speeding tickets, and that they mail you your ticket etc...and I was just looking for people who have any input into this or experience that may shed light on the situation

Those aren't the kind that catches speeding or running red lights. We had the kind that catches cars running red lights and stop signs here in MN acouple years ago but it got put away as it was ruled unconstitutional.

IMO i think they are for the DOT to control traffic (turn on merge lane lights etc), see if there are any accidents, and stuff

We have tons of cameras here in Metro ATL, we can go to http://www.georgia-navigator.com and check current traffic conditions. I love it, works get when I need to check traffic before leaving for work. There not to catch speeding, mainly for DOT to monitor traffic

I dont think the use the camera's for the traffic lights. I know where I live there are sensors barried in the ground. When you pull up to the light it knows your car is there. and will turn the light green for you. The camera's they have at intersections for people who run red lights. I know that for a fact my girlfriend got a very clear picture of her rear end and plate in the mail along with a $60 ticket.
