Darrent Williams Dead at 24
Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed early Monday morning in Denver.

Williams, a second-year player from Oklahoma State, was 24. Details regarding the shooting and subsequent investigation will be made available by the Denver Police Department as it deems appropriate.

STATEMENT FROM DENVER BRONCOS OWNER PAT BOWLEN REGARDING DARRENT WILLIAMS:

“All of us are devastated by this tragedy. To lose a young player, and more important, a great young man such as Darrent Williams, is incomprehensible. To lose him in such a senseless manner as this is beyond words. My deepest feelings, all my thoughts and prayers, go out to Darrent’s mother and family. The entire Broncos’ organization shares my grief. Darrent was a wonderful young man, and his passing is a great loss for his family, the Broncos and the city.”

STATEMENT FROM DENVER BRONCOS HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN REGARDING DARRENT WILLIAMS:

“Losing a fine young man such as Darrent Williams leaves me speechless with sadness. We all know that Darrent was an excellent player, but as a person, he was a first class young man who brightened every room with his smile, attitude and personality. I cannot express how heartsick I feel at this loss. All of our players and coaches are completely shocked by this terrible tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to the entire Williams family.”

it better not be something stupied because they lost that game to the SF 49ners that lead them to get knock out of the playoff.. thats really stupied...

dang that sucks does it say why he was shot..
i just lost a co worker the day after christmas he was only 23 and he died from an infection in his lungs. out of nowhere he just went to the hospital and past away

this was just a few blocks from where we were partying, the white limo they were in is still there since i drove home last night at 4 am..

Police have issued an APB for Colo. license plate 665 OBS. 9NEWS has learned the 1998 white Chevy Tahoe believed to be involved in the shooting death of Darrent Williams is registered to Brian Hicks. Hicks, 27, is currently in jail on attempted murder charges. The key witness, Lonnie Clark, in the case against Hicks was gunned down outside of her house December 6, days before she was to testify against him.

Murder investigation zeros in on SUV registered to admitted gang member
KUSA - 9NEWS has learned the vehicle said to be involved in the shooting death of Darrent Williams is registered to a self-professed gang member.

Hicks, 27, is currently in jail on attempted murder charges. The key witness, Lonnie Clark, in the case against Hicks was gunned down outside of her house December 6, days before she was to testify against him. The murder of Clark is still under investigation, Hicks was in jail on December 6.

Hicks, a self confessed gang member, had previously mentioned ties to the Crips gang.

Williams was shot and killed early Monday morning while traveling from the Shelter night club where nearly 800 people had gathered to celebrate Kenyon Martin’s birthday.

A person with Williams at the nightclub New Year’s Eve was said to be dressed all in red, which is a color commonly associated with the Bloods gang. Sources tell 9NEWS that while at the nightclub, the person was in an altercation with other club goers dressed all in blue, a color commonly associated with the Crips gang.

This has led police to believe the attack on the limousine could have been gang related.

Police say the manner in which the bullets were sprayed were typical of an intentional act to hurt someone, as they were shot at roughly at head level.

Police combed Hicks’ neighborhood throughout Tuesday night in search of the 1998 white Chevy Tahoe. They issued the All Points Bulletin for the vehicle’s license plate 665 OBS Wednesday morning.

New developments in the case came just as teammates, family members and friends were to gather for a private memorial service in honor of Williams.
