Driver Hospitalized After Racing On I-5
(CBS) SANTA ANA, Calif. A driver who may have been racing when his Honda Civic went off the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway at about 100 mph was hospitalized Thursday with serious injuries, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The car went off the road near Chapman Avenue, crashed through some trees, overturned and came to rest in a Motel 6 parking lot on top of a Chevrolet Suburban about 2:15 a.m., according to CHP Sgt. Paul Pines.

The driver, whose name was withheld, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, he said.

Initial reports indicated that the driver appeared to be racing another vehicle, he said, though no description of the second vehicle was available.

The driver was able to get out of his car before paramedics arrived, Pines said.
