Getting a job

Hey guys, well Im currently a junior in high school right now, and I think it's time for me to start considering what I wanna do in the future! Right now, I am CRAZILY addicted to automobiles (imports mostly). I really want to get a job that is associated with cars and modding. What do you guys suggest me do? Any of you guys here that's walked on my path can share some experiences with me and spread the wisdom?

Try getting a job at a location shop around your area. May not pay well but it will be something you can put on your resume. The experience will be very valuable also.

just get a job doing anything at a shop youre interested in.
even if youre just sweeping the floors, let them know what you want to do, after you show some work ethic things will start to open up for you. especially without experience or connections its gonna take some work to get where you want to be.

What about major? Is it safe to major in automobile? By that, I mean will it allow me to put food on my plate for a long time?

Everyone thats into cars wants a career with them.

If your gonna go the car path, apply for BMW and top end car manufacturers. Try to get into the actual design and testing field instead of working in a garage.

Once you go auto, you need to go all the way. I don't think there's a chance to back out midway and decide on a new career without losing precious time.

If thats what you wanna do, id deffinately say do it. Im 19 but have been working since i was 13/14. Always was interested in cars but never really thought i could make a living doing something with them- and im sure as hell not becoming a salesman.

With that being said, Im now working at an autoparts store (here right now). Its great. Ive made so many connections already and love being around parts. You really start to pick up stuff watching the older co-workers whom have been stuck here for awhile. Working at an autoparts store making (10/11/12 bucks an hour) would not put food on your table but would give you an idea of whats involved/components/how people in the "business" work.

IMO- My advice to you would be to go with it. Start small but if you've got a goal, work towards it. Pick up an application at the local pep-boys or napa autoparts (where i work), and hope for the best. After a year and a half, i love it here and dont mind driving the extra 15 minutes to the store im at.

Im a junior (yes with an Si, flame suit on) anyway man i dont think you should get a job, junior year is the most important year in high school. Colleges look at this year more than any other year. I want a job so bad so i can take my car out of my stock stage. But i know it is more beneficial to wait til im a senior. Go to college and take a good major like engineering and once you graduate you have a better chance of getting the job of your choice Or go to UTI?

Hmm yeah that's what I was thinking, but my junior year is pretty much ****ed up since I screwed up too much. I plan on going to community college for 2 years and work my way to university. I just want to get a taste of what it's like working with cars, and if that's really what I want to be doing for the rest of my life.

And good thing I'm a senior; the mod bug really bit hard.

The people who are my age posting on this thread need to stop free-loading off of their parents and get a job!

I am also currently a junior in high school (I would have been a senior, but i repeated first grade) and i work part-time as a Service Assistant at the same Honda dealership my dad runs. I've been working there for 1 and 1/2 years, and my grades in school haven't been affected one bit. I am a high honor role student with between a 3.7-3.8 GPA. I buy my own gas, clothes, etc...and my parents only house and feed me at the present time lol. My parents would always buy me things that i wanted when i was younger, and that goes right up to the remainder of my 06 Civic LX payments after my initial downpayment. The only things my parents pay for right now for me besides the rest of my car payments is my car insurance and cell phone bill.

My advice to all you kids on here with Si's and no jobs is to go out and find one so you can start being responsible for yourselves. Then, when you get to colllege, you will already know how to take care of yourself and be independent.
