Just got a call from the Fraud Department from Mastercard

My company doesn't give out company credit cards. I work in a small satellite office (3 employees) and I take care of all the office supplies, etc. I got authorization to order some more expensive stuff (damn $1200 for a 5 drawer filing cabinet). Not 5 minutes after I place the order my cell phone is going nuts on vibrate in the drawer. The Fraud Dept was making sure the purchase was legit. That was kind of cool. I'm not sure what will happen when I need to drop 5k when I'm traveling in the Caribbean for work and cell phones don't work.

Now if only the U.S. government had that kind of oversight! Might stop the $400 toilet seats and $100 nails.

If you're seriously going to drop 5k in the Carribean, just call and authorize it before-hand. They'll make a note so they won't call you while on vacation.

I have heard that the 400 dollar toilet seats and so on are actually priced that way on purpose, for black projects in the government. So 20 bucks for the toilet seat and 380 bucks for the black project super secret stuff fund. I just hope this is the way it is because if we are paying that much for a toilet seat I am going to be peeved, but then again, if it's a black project, it's so top secret we'll never know... lol

Unfortunately, large necessary purchases are never known in advance (especially when working in the Caribbean). Its more like "OH F***! Now we need to buy ________!". Total PITA, but frighteningly common. Its not unusual to drop 20k for work in a week.

It makes me feel good knowing that an entire team is watching spending habits for anything that throws a red flag. Of course, its when a thief gets a card and slowly spends thousand of dollars over a week on a road trip to Vegas or something that may or may not throw up the flag.

Credit card fun! One time my dad got a Skymiles Amex to replace his normal one, only Amex treated it as a new account and it only had like a thousand dollars on it. We maxed it out pretty quick on vacation in the BVI. There just happened to be an Amex office on the island we were on. (Go figure) Got it sorted out pretty quick but boy was my dad pissed...

But yeah it is nice when credit card companies call to confirm suspicious purchases. Almost makes you think they have a notion of customer service.
