credit cards!

alright... here we go.

right now i have a Citibank student visa card (the mtvU one) and it has pretty good rewards, but they are only offered in points.

I'm looking for a cashback card, can anyone recommend one? I spend the majority of my money in groceries/restauarants/gas. Looking for at least 3%+ cashback on those items.

Also what would be nice is a first-purchase bonus (i know some places give like $50 or something after you first purchase) which would be great as well.

There are several cards out there that offer a certain percentage off goods and a certain percentage off gas.

I have the AAA card. I get up to 5% off gas monthly. I generally save $5-10 a month on gas. And I'm pretty sure you don't have to be a member to get the card.

Here's a site for other offers that you can compare cards and features you want:

Check out the finance forum at Fatwallet. They have some threads in there that track the best cash back cards.

I drive a lot. I can easily fill up once a week, and with gas around $30 to fill the tank, that's $120 per month.

My trip to Florida back in July elevated my gas savings to nearly $20 that month.

Go to EmigrantDirect.com and set up a savings account and then get their cashback Mastercard....
and then pay it off EVERY month.
Never pay a finance charge, ever.
That is the only way to use a credit card. Use it to consolidate bills into one monthly payment, but never to borrow money.

Get rid of your credit card. IT will bite you in the ass later.

I have yet to be bitten. I've had cc's since I was a freshman in college and have always used them responsibly and to MY advantage. :)

credit cards are NOT bad if you know how to use them.

I pay off my bill every month in full, i treat it like a debit card.

You're at a disadvantage if you have the money and you don't use a credit card, because I'm getting free stuff :)

Plus it's easier than carrying around so much cash. Build credit, less to carry, easy to track spendings, free stuff, what's not to like? =]

thanks for the info guys!
