paypal fees....
so i was curious why everyone who sells something charges the buyer an extra 3% for fess...I wanted a answer and asked paypal and this what they told me:
Dear Mike, Thank you for contacting PayPal. I apologize for the delay in responding to your service request. PayPal offers our members access to the world's leading online payment service. As our network of members has grown, an increasing number of sellers of goods and services are accepting payments through PayPal. Under Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express regulations and the laws of several states, including California, merchants may not charge a fee to the buyer for accepting credit card payments (often called a 'surcharge'). · In order to comply with these laws and regulations, sellers may not charge a fee for accepting PayPal payments (including all funding methods) · This limitation does not prevent sellers from imposing a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge (in other words, the handling fee for transactions paid through PayPal may not be higher than the handling fee for transactions paid through other payment methods) · Sellers residing in the United Kingdom and listing items for sale on a UK-based website may impose a surcharge, but only under the following conditions: 1. Both the buyer and seller reside in the United Kingdom; 2. The purchase price is paid in pounds sterling; 3. The surcharge imposed by the seller is no greater than is necessary to recover the receiving fees incurred by the seller; 4. The seller clearly indicates to the buyer prior to the buyer's submission of a bid or (in non-auction transactions) prior to completion of the purchase that a surcharge will be incurred and the amount of the surcharge. Please let me know if you need further assistance. Sincerely, Julie PayPal Business Support PayPal, an eBay Company Original Message Follows: ------------------------ Form Message customer subject: seller fees customer message: Additional Information: 'can a seller sell an item and charge an extra 3% for the associated fees with paypal. i thought as a seller those fees are normally incurred. can someone please shed some light on this.... thanks' sounds interesting but how many people actually follow these rules stated by paypal??? |

I always wondered about that too. I know from when I worked at Bank of America that Visa/Mastercard transaction fees are covered by Visa/Mastercard themselves. Retailers aren't allowed to charge transaction fees.
I always thought that it was Paypal's way of staying in business. You know 3% here, then 3% there... it all adds up. |

i had paypal for a longgg time and yea 3% does add up
i mean look at the PS3 auctions....they're only allowing paypal as the payment method and they go for lirk $1500! so 3% of that...u get the idea what i do is just add it up on shipping for like a buck or two...then again I always ship it priority...cheaper on packages |

Most of the fees that Pay Pal charges now originated after Ebay Co. bought Pay Pal several yrs. ago (Pay Pal was originally an independent company). I have been an ebay member since '99 and all of the fees from Ebay and Pay Pal have made selling alot of things just not worth the trouble for the small amount of money that you end up with. (and I am not even going to mention the increases in shipping charges)
Most of the sellers on ebay are now private businesses .... there used to be alot more auctions from individuals. |
