A very expensive whoops

This story hit the EliseTalk forums yesterday -- it all starts with an Lotus owner in Orlando, FL who took his Elise into Goodyear to drop a new set of tires on his canary yellow grip-tight speedster. And the result was -- well, let's just say we'd be laughing if we weren't crying so hard. Here's the story, straight from forum member and dented-Elise owner qball:

First of all, I did EVERYTHING I was supposed to except stick around and watch.

Dropped my Elise off to the local Goodyear shop to have new F1G3s installed. My Father-in-law is the service manager and has been for 10 years. He is out on medical leave, but he met me at the shop this morning, because he understands the uniqueness of the car.

I handed them the tire tools and opened the Owner's Manual to the jacking instructions so they would be clear. We went over all the instructions and they assured me I was in good hands.

We left...1 hour later I get a call about the "accident" and that I needed to come down...

WTF!

So this is what I found...

Ok class, our next lesson, weight distribution....

wow... that's complete ignorance! why the hell do the need to lift the car 3+ ft off the ground to install new tires?! 0.5-1ft is plenty, especially for a low car like that Elise! sheesh. stupidity pwnd.

Take my word, you arent smarter than any certified mechanic. Someone who you dont know made a mistake and now ALL mechanics are dumbasses. How quickly can YOU R&R an odyssey trans? Or do an alignment? Can you even read an electrical schematic?

Do yourself a HUGE favor, stick to your day job and dont be so damn judgemental.

you should be careful about makeing such broad generalizations. There are plenty of mechanics out there with under ten years experience that deff know what they are doing. Just because some quick lube techs suck doesn't mean all techs suck.

I HATE HOISTS!! I hate lifting anything and being underneath those things. No wonder my dealership offers life insurance.

Did I mention I hated hoists?

Oh, and I despise the comment about all mechanics or techs are IDIOTS. That's a HUGE generalization and you are definitely misinformed. Does that make me and the great people I work with idiots? We're all techs too.

i'm sure if i did it once, i can do it in half of the time of the first one.

i'm pretty good with mechanicals. I can pretty much do it if i had tools to do it. I just choose to do it as a hobby. and everyone of mechanics(exception to few) have been wrong or try to tell me some BS so i'm pretty confident that I know better than most. (on certain cars)

are all college graduates smart because they have a degree? not really so think on that
