60 day sentence ... hmmm
Wartburg man gets 60 days for pouring gas on his wife and trying to light her on fire
In an October plea deal, Paul Riehl pleaded guilty to pouring gasoline on his wife and trying to set her on fire, as well as several counts of cruelty to animals. Monday Paul Riehl and his victims found out how he will pay for his crimes. Paul Riehl's ex-wife testified about the day she left home for good. "Paul grabbed my arm and began to pour the gasoline on me and himself, dropped the canister and grabbed a lighter from his pockets and he struck it several times," said Kristin Riehl. But it did not light. Kristin took her teenage daughter and left their home, but says she could not take their pets. She thought they would be safe. Later she heard Riehl was seen at the home on more than one occasion after she left. "Which gave him more than one opportunity to provide the animals with food and water or take them to the humane society so they would not have to endure the torture he was inflicting, but he didn't," said Kristin. Two weeks later, one animal was dead. The rest were rescued, and Riehl was charged with assault and cruelty to animals. He pleaded guilty to the charges in a plea deal. At Monday's sentencing Riehl's victims begged the judge to give him jail time. Riehl sat emotionless as his teenage daughter told the court she is constantly looking over her shoulder and is scared for her life. The judge sentenced Riehl to 60 days in jail and the rest of his three year sentence on an intensive form of probation. Riehl's attorney says he is happy with the decision. "I think the judge followed the law and did what he should have done," said Riehl's attorney, Walter Johnson. "The judge is constrained by the statutes and the law. We obviously asked for more time, would have liked to have seen more, but we have to respect the court's decision," said senior assistant district attorney general Frank Harvey. Paul Riehl served 52 days in jail after his arrest. That means he has eight days left to serve on his sentence. http://www.wbir.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=31550 that sounds about right  |
