Datsun (Nissan) 240Z: Opinions???

Anybody had any experience with the Z? I've always wanted a 300Z (91-96 N/A) but I think I've sorta outgrown them just a bit and want something a bit more mature. I thought about getting a used Saturn Sky in a few years for a project car (when they've depreciated ...thank you GM), but I've always had an eye for the 240Z. They're very James Bond-ish. Very sexy vehicles and easily one of the best designed vehicles ever found on North American soil ever. Any other thoughts?

no need for such a heavy turd...a nice small block hopped up a bit makes those things incredably fast. I had one back in highschool that had the straight 6 in it....way too fast for any teenager to be driving but OHHH so fun!!

lol....sweeeet.

My next choice (probably my only choice as far as economy goes) was going to be an SR20DET, but I think I may be able to find an RB26DETT for cheap (or relatively...)

Beautiful, classic, japanese goodness. Makes me smile everytime I see one. This is our generation's classic muscle cars. And our dads respect us for them when we get them.

Yep. Here's a little FairladyZ or Datsun 240Z history.

Great cars!!!! It's so hard to find one that isn't riddled with rust. You rarely see anything older than a 1st gen 300 ZX nowadys in NY.

I'm a huge nissan fan (I do own a 240sx still) and I love this car. I've considered picking one up as an additional project car every now and then. Forget about the RB26DETT as a motor though, it's very heavy compared to your other options. The V-8 is the way to go with this car. I've seen a few videos of one of these things with a twin turbo corvette motor in it...it's rediculous. Anyway, I totally approve, I've always been in love with these cars.

These normally came with the straight 6 but the Chevy 350 was an option. You just can't go wrong grabbing one of these if they are not rust buckets.

If youre looking to do a v8 swap there are better options with companies who produce conversion kits. For example, I am currently looking to do a Porshe 944 Ls1 swap but another popular choice is a 88 or so Mazda rx-7. Cheap to find in decent shape, very lightweight and they are two of the best handling cars ever made.

best thing to do is drop in a 280z motor and tran non-fi slap on a triple side draft weber 40 carbs, cams, headers, lsd, upgrade the brakes and suspension and you have a wicked street/ track machine

GET ONE!! Here is my 76 280Z. It was my mothers originally. I've done tons to it...full suspension (tokico shocks, springs, front and rear sways and strut bars, urethane bushings), Discs front and rear, and the engine is a built up N/A around 250-270 horse with programmable FI. Also lots of interior/stereo, clutch, tranny etc etc and too many things to list.

It's a beast...way faster and corners much flatter than my Si. Love driving it. Needless to say it is a little less practical than the Si though! (and the mileage is not even close) I have plans to turbo it in the future. It will be a real tire smoker with 400hp and 400 torque at around 2700 lbs (a 240 would probably be 2500ish lbs similarly equipped but with a more flexy frame)

I'd take the older 300Z over the RX-7, but the RX-7 in my opinion was the better of the two chassis. I thought about both but they just don't have that "wow" factor the 240Z has. Mmmm.....
