to be a Dj or not to be a DJ ..
Alllllrighty then, i need a new hobby.
I love music, and i really need something to do on weekends/weeknites. Ive given some thought into trying DJ'ing. Probably never hit mainstream if ever out of my basement even. Ive always got beats in my head, always curious if i could makem a reality.. Drum N Bass and maybe a little Hard House. So whatcha think? To be a DJ, or not to be a DJ, that is the question.. Anyone here a DJ? If so, do you think its worth it? (~2-3k in gear, thats alota mods! lol.) |

TT's are the shizzzz....I wish I still had mine. I didn't do a whole lot of mixing, but whenever my buddy came over he'd work the heck out of my Technics. I mainly used them to sample old records, but with a lot of that stuff available as MP3's, I'd like to move into CDJ's. Still, can't beat a good pair of TT's though. |

well you can get some 1200 for about $300 a piece, a (decent) mixer for about $200 to $300 and you'll need alot of other Misc. crap. I have Technics and CDJ1000's I have to say that the CDJ1000's get a hell of a lot more use, I mean they have on board sampling, seamless looping, master tempo.... and you can just download songs burn em and slip em into the CDJ1000. I'm setting my sights on the pioneer djm 909...it will be mine very soon :)

I've got some turntables and a cd turntable. Honestly I think the cd turntable really sux for scratching, but maybe its because I got all American DJ equipment which from what I know is just a little better than Gemini. Anyway, my parents are gonna bring my turntables down to Florida this weekend, so maybe i will get back into it again. BTW, I really suck at it, lol. I just do it as a hobby when I'm bored.

if you want to create music, you'd be more of a producer DJ than a club DJ. You'd be spending time creating music if you want to get those beats from your head to your hands. 2 TT's, mixer, laptop, and serato is all you need for a great setup if you've got the music in MP3s already. But if you want to make beats, I'd say get an Akai MPC (any version). They are expensive, but worth if you really want to make beats. Plus they are fun if you just want to bang out beats (they have 16 touch sensitive sample pads). You'll understand once you start reading more. But decide WHAT you want to do first. Cause if you go the club/gig dj route, you'll also need speakers and an amplifier. But if you do the production stuff, you'll need to read into effects machines, and maybe even Protools!
But remember, if you start performing at parties and such, you'll need a mic and some skillz to go with it. If you want to make money with this new idea of yours, there is always the wedding biz...very profitable...I know, it's what I do full time! EDIT - I run Final Scratch 2, which is very similar to Serato. I've used serato as well, and it is pretty damn good. A lot more support than with FS2. |

i'd go with serato if I were you...FS2 is for those who've had it for a while and can't get rid of it/don't really care (like me).
So, sounds like a pair of Technics 1210mk2 TT's and the Rane TT57L (has serator built in), and a laptop (New Black Macbook I highly recommend), and you are all set. All you have to do is get good at it :) Check out www.skratchworx.com |

I want to get Serato too..I spin mostly hip hop and I live away from home right now so I pay mostly in clubs but at home I have a very large setup for doing weddings, birthday parties, school dances and fundraisers and such. . ..It's made me enough money, I mean that's all I do (and go to school) and I pay for my own Si so.. . . . it's been good to me.

If you want to create beats, I would urge you to look at Reason 2.0. I have it and use it sometimes. It is a complicated program, but once you get used to it, the things you can do are incredible.
If you want to spin I would suggest figuring out WHAT you wanted to spin and what kind of DJ you want to be. If you want to spin electronic music, than TT, CDTT are fine. But if you want to be a turntablist, I would only go with TT with high quality carts as well as a mixer with only two channels as it is thinner in between the tables and less movement for you. I spin hard progressive trance/epic trance, as well as some house/vocal house. Got 2 Tech1200 the small clear Vestax mixer. Been spinning for couple years now an I love it. Be warned though, I suggest you play around with someone elses equipment, because this is an expensive hobby, not something buy everything and decide its not for you =D
