Beam Me up...

Hey, I can't wait until there's no need to stand in line at the airport.

That article seems remarkably vague. Hard to get a real grasp of what was actually done.

heh, no, I understand. Doubt I'd understand the gory details of it myself anyway. It's just that with any rather spectacular-sounding piece of science news, I try to remain some initial skepticism. And in this case, the last I knew of "teleportation" experiments was that it was limited to single atoms or photons, and in some cases, such as experiments where photons were made to appear to violate the speed of light, follow-up work showed something much less exciting had occurred.

My understanding of Sci-Fi teleportation has always been that in reality it would take levels of energy and computing power that may be beyond our ability to ever achieve, and may violate certain physical laws, such as the Uncertainty Principle. It seems as though they're claiming they don't have these problems, and while I'm certainly willing to accept that, although I've heard the term I have nothing but the absolute fuzziest notion of what "quantum entanglement" is, and quantum physics is one of the favorite playthings of modern pseudoscience. I'll need to learn more (which basically means I'll have to watch the science newsmagazines for articles).

Basically, this scientist has figured out how to now transport atom-clusters over a distance of a meter, as opposed to just particles between two atoms side-by-side. In this realm of size, it is a huge leap forward. It doesn't mean we should expect to see transporters tomorrow, but it does give hope for the possibility of this science to become practical in our lifetimes... well maybe yours at least.

You lost me at "Quantum entanglement involves entwining two or more particles without physical contact."

But, it's still cool as hell, whatever it means.

Oh. That's what it means. Gotcha. And Geezer, you're not THAT old.

Suggesting we may not require cars in the future as modes of transportation? Treason!

Interesting article, though.

Think about it. If someone can beam themselves (or any object) from one point to another (instantly), it would drastically change our world. We would either completely annihilate ourselves (human race) or have to learn to live with each other. By the way, I would still want to be able to tear around on four (and two) wheels, even if I don't have to.
