uhhhh wtf?

soo i was walking to my car after school and i was about to pop my trunk when i see a huge spider. i never seen a spider this big and in this color before. it was white and had pink on it and looked lik a crab or a giant tic. it scared the crap outta me cus i thought it was a stain so i was about to rub it off with a wet towel but then it jumped off my car and landed on the ground somewhere and i lost it.

wtf. was it a tic or a spider.

description: its white with pink on it and it looks like a crab.

anyone know?

perhaps the dot was red and not pink? Indicating a black widow. Althought since you live in cali (like i did) i'm sure you've seen plenty of black widows to know what one looks like.

I have this thing where animals i'm extremly afraid of i tend to divulge in research. Sharks and Spiders are my two biggest fears in life so i do quite a bit of research on both.

duh i'm an idiot. I just read your post and you answered the question right there.

The spider you saw i'm almost certain is a jumping spider. Non dangerous to humans. Kinda cute lil guys actually. Their quite small but the jumping spider itself originates in australia but there are different forms of the spider in the US. They sometimes have a light red abdomen which could look pink.

Did the spider seem to have like fuzzy hair?

that's a high res shot and you probably wouldn't notice the hair but it does resemble a crab somewhat. They come in all different colors with different markings.

I'm not aware of jumping spiders that reach half-dollar size in legspan.

What you have there sounds like a classic crab spider. They're specialized, camoflagued ambush predators that live in flowers. Interesting that she was on your car.

There are several different families of crab spiders, so "crab spider" isn't denoting a specific family but rather a general appearance and hunting style, although Family Thomisidae seems to be the most, uh, "popular."

Here are more pictures.

Caught a black and brown widow on my back patio and found MULTIPLE egg sacs under my patio furniture...

Freaking gross and scary. My kids play out there.

i believe that there are over 700 species of "jumping spiders". I assume that one of the many species can become large. Not to mention people tend to overestimate the size of the spider.

haha no. As i said above, the thing i'm most afraid of (being spiders and sharks) i tend to do research about. I don't really get that extensive into it, just which ones are venomous, where they live, when to look out for them, etc etc. I got i've always been afraid of spiders for some reason but when i was bit by a brown recluse (or hobo spider, not sure) i became more cautious and started reading up on them.

As for sharks, I avoid water all together. You won't ever find my ass in an ocean surfing. I've only had a few encounters with sharks, all of which i was never bothered or harmed but they still scare the crap outta me.

For some reason there's a ton of sites about Australian jumping spiders.

It looks like there's at least one jumping spider on the West coast that can reach 2.5 cm. One link claimed it can occasionally take mice...
(Yes, I know other spiders can take small mammals/birds...it's still creepy.)
