I agree with you. I know many artists and folks in general, have faith, but it seems so rote when some of the celebrities say it. Like, they can't come up with anything else to say. It just seems fake sometimes. Like it's hip to talk about God. I do like it though when some artists, like Kayne West, include religious elements in their music and videos. His "Touch the Sky" video was awesome and "Jesus Walks" is one of my favorite songs.

Chamillionaire actually is religious though. I forgot what the name of the song on his new album was but the lyrics went something like "When I look back in my life I realize somethin ain't right - I'm missing you, Lord, in my life. I just wanna make everything right.. something something"

That being said it really is annoying to hear every single person say "I just wanna thank God, my agent, blah blah blah."
The only other thing I can say about Cham is Chamillitary is the name of his division of a record label that's why he's always promoting it. That, and "Get your shine on" wasn't Chamillionaire.. I forget who it was though.

Shakira's a$$ ftw.

I'm sorry, but T.I. sucked A$$...plain and simple. I like his stuff...his beats are bassy and rough, but he can't rap live...period.

So.. i like his music but not him.

So if someone thanks God, it automatically makes them cliche'? The way you're talking you make it sound like you know him personally, like you two kick it or whatever. "Oh, he was just fakin" . I thank God every chance I get and I'm not even on an awards show. I can thank my parents too, but if it's not God's will that I'm breathin, my parents have nothing to do with that. Now if it was...I dunno, K-Fed, I'd see your point, but Chamillionaire is actually religious. So is DMX. So is Chris Tucker. So are a lot of artists and celebrities.

I'm off my soap-box now.

Here's what they should say:

"I'd like to thank God, first and foremost. Because without him giving me this talent, I could not have come up with songs about gettin' booty, smokin weed, pimpin' hoes, cheatin' on my baby's momma, swearin' like a mofo, smackin' bitches, and hatin' on the po po."

I realize that these are just lyrics and may not reflect the actual character of the person, but I'd hardly call this being "religious". Just because they put 1 song on their album about "getting right with the man" doesn't mean that they are a religious person when the other 11 songs are glamourizing the above mentioned. If they are truly religious then it would all be praise and glory right?

And don't give me that "it's how they grew up in the hood" shit. Rise above that and sing about something where you're going and the good you're going to do, not where you came from and how great the ghetto life is. I realize this is a front they have to put on because it sells albums, I get that. But if everyone stopped buying into this, eventually the albums wouldn't sell. I'm not trying to say all rap is bad and nobody should buy it. I myself have some of these CDs, but it's because of the great beats and rythm that no other genre of music has.

If I were to receive an award for the above mentioned, no matter if it was rock, rap, country, whatever, I'd probably thank God for giving me great parents, friends, or whoevever helped my talents along.

I yield the soap-box to the person on my left.

Being religious doesn't make you a saint. Contrary to popular belief, being religious makes your life a helluva lot worse. I'm far from perfect. I cuss people out all the time. And yes, I'm from the ghetto. So that makes me "hardly religious" right? Ok....whatever you say.

You can't say anything about what they rap about if you don't know the person at any level and if you don't know where they came from or what they went through. I understand some of the shit is corny, like when they rap about sneakers and how wet their girl is and shit, but i think its interesting when they talk about their past and how it was. Its like poetry wit their own flow and a beat behind it. And just like skittle said, just cause they rap about this shit you don't know if they go to church or not, and what they're beliefs are. You can't judge what you don't know

These award shows would get on my nerves (many years ago) even when I used to like most of the music/artists that were there. These days I just cannot handle most of the artists & music. That's cool though, because I believe this is what happens, and eventually (in several years) you guys will probably look at these shows with even more contempt than you do now.

I never said that. I never said that being from the ghetto makes you "hardly religious". I said that most artists contradict themselves when they say they are religious and then sing about abusing women, smoking weed, and knockin' boots.

I wasn't the one who said Chamillionaire was religious. You guys did. So as far as me knowing if a person is religious or not, how do you guys know? Do you sit next to him at church on Sundays? Do you see him walking around town practicing his faith? Does he carry a Bible with him everywhere he goes? Or is it that he has one or two songs that talk about being religious and you are basing your beliefs on this? In this case, we'd both be wrong. Me for thinking he isn't religious based on the lyrics of one of his songs. And you for thinking he is religious based on the lyrics of another one of his songs.

I don't know what kind of music you listen to, and I won't pretend to know. But Chamillionaire has been around a lot longer than people realize. Being from Texas, I've been hearing his underground stuff for years and quite often he'll just go into the studio talking about his life and trust me.. he is religious. I don't know the guy or anything, but when he pulls a Dave Chappelle and walks away from million dollar deals just to make sure he can spend time with his mother and go to church with her because she was worried about him would tell me that he is a religious (and incredibly talented) guy. It's more than just one song.. it's chamillitary mane.

and I love you for saying that. jkjkjk. I actually just picked this cd up again after losing it about a month ago.. love this cd. If you really want to pick up some underground ish of his.. check out Mixtape Messiah, good stuff.

*yes, it's ironic that after an arguement about how religious he is I mention a cd from him calling himself a messiah - but hey.. it's all whateva

As bad as it sounds, i think they try to come out as being religous to sell more records. Like several people have said above, if you look at his videos and some lyrics, he doesn't look very religous. When it comes down to it, what is chamillionaire known for?? He's known for his songs for the club. They mean very little, but they sound good. Now Kayne west is seen as being religous because of his songs. Its not that i don't believe in god, but try sitting on your ass all day, god won't give you sh!t. But to start his speech that way, i guess he hasn't been to too many award shows.

BTW, I want you guys to know that I'm not hatin' on rap music and rappers. I like all types of music and am familiar with the Houston rap scene. I used to live in Houston for 26 years before moving to Columbus. I worked with a girl who lived close to Chamillionaire in Acres Homes. One of my ex-girlfriends has hung out with Eightball & MJG. I currently own DJ Screw 3 in the Morning CD, 2 UGK CDs, and a Bushwick Bill CD - Phantom of the Rapra. I listened to Fat Pat (RIP), Screw, South Park Mexican, DJ DMD, UGK, Geto Boys, and Lil Keke. Since I'm not in Houston anymore, I haven't witnessed the blowin up of artists such as Paul Wall, Slim Thug and others.

I wasn't meaning to question your motives in asking about how religious cham really is.. Sorry if it sounded as if I was meaning to be rude. I just happen to be a big cham fan myself so I've heard a lot of his ranting about life and how God means a lot to him. As far as Kanye West - I think that he has used religion to sell more records than anyone, besides creed. I'm a Kanye fan too, but I've heard him on some underground cd's and stuff too and never once does he mention God, Christianity, or anything relevant to the 2. I think nicest thing I've heard Kanye say (underground) was "Sometimes I wanna say **** my b!tch, but I don't want nobody to **** my b!tch."
I don't know about you, but that doesn't sound too christian. In saying that, I'm also going to say that I have in no way heard all of his underground stuff, or even an entire Kanye West cd for that matter.. it's just the impression that I get from what I have heard.

Now Garth Brooks, that fella loves Jesus as much as he loves "The Oooooasis"

[edit] I also wanted to add that I like your music selection there [IvI].. I listen to just about everything that I can get my hands on.. I owe music my life.
