any medical people? need internet diagnosis...

so I'm having a helluva time typing because over the last hour, the "outside" part of my right hand has gone almost completely limp. this is freaking me out a little. like if you stretch all your fingers out, they point straight out and away. when i do it, my pinky finger no longer points out, it sorta points down at a 45 deg angle. it's causing me to type all retarded. I have no numbness in it so I don't think this is carpal tunnel starting. (I hope not.)

1 year ago I was in the emergency room for excruciating pain in my arm/shoulder on my other side. turns out I herniated two discs in my deck in a skydive. i never had surgery, just a truckload of steroids and vicodin. i'm wondering with my neck getting sore lately if this is related. shit. any med people in here ever heard of sudden onset partial paralysis in the hand? I'm starting to worry. My pinky finger is next to useless right now. I can contract it, but extension right now is a complete joke.

Got this from WebMD:

http://www.webmd.com/hw/back_pain/hw226047.asp

With herniation in the neck (cervical spine), you may have pain or numbness in the shoulders, arms, or chest.

Maybe it came down to your hand. Either way, if it persists, head to the emergency room and get some attention. Hope your condition clears soon

*I'm not a doctor. I just peruse WebMD from time to time*

Hey man im in kinesiology, and sounds to me like you have some nerve damage. When you herniated your disk skydiving the disks might be pushing up against your nerve roots causing some damage. But if there isnt any numbness or tingling in your pinky... then im not sure but its almost like your extensor digiti muscles are not getting enough of a nervous signal which could be due to your herniated disks in your neck, but usually that would affect more than just your pinky

I'm really no expert but ive worked in a physiotherapy clinic for a while and Ive picked up quite a bit.

definitly get that checked out, but in the mean time you should try working the muscle in your pinky (as long as there isnt any pain) and you can do that by flexing and extending your pinky try doing it like 20 reps 3-5 times a day

or if it doesnt hurt and you feel thats not good enough get one of those grip machines that measure your grip and try doing that for a 10 reps 3 times a day

(or you can try pushing down on your pinky while you push up against it, trying to extend it)

that will retrain the neuromuscular junctions in your muscle and will help the neurons in healing and reestablishing their paths.

Its the summer time so some I'm a little rusty on all my terms but I think it should be good enough :)

I hope this makes sense, and it helps a bit!

I'm an RN in the operating room. Both orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons are qualified to deal with spinal issues. Neurosurgeons actually perform more procedures on the spine than procedures involving the brain and head. I'm not going to recommend one over the other, but just keep it in mind, especially if you need a second opinion.

It is likely pain and nerve damage from your herniated cervical disks in the neck or as it is called in the medical field, degenerative disk disease of the cervical spine with radiculopathy to the upper extremities. I'm also not a Dr. but work in a related field and it sounds like you may need a MRI and surgical consultation.

just wanted to say "thanks" to all of you who chimed in. I knew we'd some sort of med people in here! my condition is sort of ok right now. I can't really explain what's been going on simply because everything is hit and miss. Some days my neck hurts like hell, other days not so much. In addition to an already known issue with my discs between C5-C6, and C6-C7, recently I started having these pinching feelings in the middle of back - it almost felt like a tightening combined with a needle being inserted. very disconcerting and quite painful. I get it laying propped up on my side fairly consistently so I needless to say I don't lay like that on purpose any more. the other night I was "wrestling" with the wife...y'know just playing around and it happened again. It takes a few minutes to "reset" and then it's pretty much ok. but i'm beginning to wonder about everything now which is annoying. I feel like I'm being a hypocondriac (sp?) but there's no mistaking the very frequent headaches, numbness in my left hand (for a year - orthopedic seems to think it may or may not go away), weakness in my right hand's right most digits (just the other night), sore neck 50% of the time, and a back that freaks out randomly.

wtf. I'm 28 yrs old. I feel like I have a 60 yr old's body.
I called my orthopedic doc. He's on vacation. So I'm playing the waiting game. If it degenerates, it's back the emergency room I guess.

Ok I'm not a doctor but I did stay at a holiday inn express last night.

No seriously I have had three right shoulder and one neck operation in the last three years. I have the same exact thing. Its from your neck. Nerve damage in the area of C-5 C-6 is what does it. Welcome to the world of nothing you can do. If you can live with it then live with it. If its all the time and never goes away then nothing you can do the nerves are already toast. If its only sometimes and you want it fixed, your in for neck (spine) surgery. Ask you doctor to send you out for an EMG, its just like acupuncture but hooked up to a battery. They will but needles (not very painfull) in your neck and again in your arm and hand. When they try to transmit a signal from the neck to the hand and its does not make it then you know its nerves.

My wife says since Im getting ready for my early military retirement at 18 years for medical I'm her favorite CRAPPLE not cripple.
three right shoulder operations
loss of feeling in both hands
One neck operation
bad knee's
bad left shoulder
and bad sleep apne needing the CPAP

i'm getting pretty good at this crapple thing.
