Some of the other issues with the GTI:
Wheel bearings
Diverter valve failures
PCV valve failures
Airbag faults
Wastegates
HPFP Cam and follower failures
Seat squeeks
RATTLES RATTLES RATTLES!!! My new element is made of complete plastic and has less rattles than my GTI ever did!
None of these are minor systems. I counted on this car being a reliable daily and it seemed I was in the shop more for crap than I was for maintenance (did every service at the dealer to ensure no warranty problems.)
I probably should have stuck with honda but I needed to venture out (came from a long line of hondas), glad that I did but I am SOOO happy to be home :)

I'll second the diverter valve problems. My cousin has an '07 GTI, he's put close to a half dozen on it, VW keeps doing it under warranty, even though he has modifications and much higher boost stan stock. Eventually he's just going to go aftermarket, until then, he'll just take the free ones.
I drove his car when it was stock, and even then, it was a lot of fun to drive. I wasn't impressed with the handling, but since he's done a lot of work to it, it is definately a car not to mess with. My friend has a turbo S2000 and right now, having been in both of them, I think it would be close.
