who made the 2.2 Ecotec?

My friend has a 2004 Saturn Ion with the 2.2 Ecotec. I always thought that GM bought them from Honda? Was the Ecotec made/originated 100% here in the US? Help!

I believe the Ecotec is a product of GM. They are not as fuel efficient or powerful as Honda's Vtec engines. I'm not sure which engines in GM's line are from Honda tho...

I believe the only Honda-manufactured engine that went into a Saturn was the Vue.

From Wikipedia:
"...starting in 2004, all 6-cylinder VUEs were equipped with the 250 hp (186 kW) Honda-manufactured L66 engine and a Honda transmission."

The Saturn Vue uses Honda's 3.5 liter V-6, used in the Odyssey and a few other Hondas/Acuras:

To the best of my knowledge, that's the only Honda automotoive engine sourced to GM.

Heh heh.

I wonder if GM still brands the Honda engines as Ecotec engines, though. Anybody have any pics?

From what I've read, the Family II engine was originally developed by Opel (pre GM) in the '70s.

the 2.2 ecotec was a scaled down version of the 2.4 twin cam previously of the z24 cavaliers, and others. To my knowledge i dont believe it utilizes any variable timing like vtec. The 2.4 twin cam was junk though.

The ecotec doesn't have variable timing but it is one strong ass motor. They produce 145 at the crank but they can handle a ton more.

And the ecotec replaced both the 2.2 OHV and the 2.4 twin cam. The 2.4 engine wasn't nearly as strong as the ecotec is but it could still hold it's own except you had to contantly work on them. The Ecotec's you just build em up and let em go.

I'm not positive as to where exactly the ecotec is built. It's either at their plant in Ohio or in Canada.

If you are interested in learning about the ecotec as well as cavaliers and cobalts. Check out www.jbody.org.

I used to own a cavalier and that site is quite informative.

Ecotec

Ecotec name was adopted in 2000 for the new generation of Family II engines. The name was already used for the Opel Family 1 and Family 0 ranges. GM intends for this new Ecotec to become its global 4-cylinder.

The Ecotec Family II is a modern chain-driven DOHC 4-valve design with an aluminum block and head (L850), designed for displacements from 1.8 to 2.4 L. It was developed by an international team of engineers and technicians from Opel's International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany, GM Powertrain in Pontiac, Michigan, and Saab in Trollhättan, Sweden. Much of the development work on this project was carried out by Lotus Engingineering, Hethel, United Kingdom. The engine uses aluminum pistons and cast iron cylinder liners. Vibration is reduced with twin balance shafts.

The current Ecotec line is manufactured in Tonawanda, New York, Kaiserslautern, Germany, and (for Saturn) in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
