I don't really see how a Nissan/GM relationship would help either company (besides the possibility of having Ghosn in the executive ranks at GM), but a Toyota/GM alliance could simply crush the competition. Interesting how this will be played out. Nice find Skittles!

I just read about this today myself. Make sense for a Japanese manufacturer to partner with a US manufacturer to appease all those who complain about "foreign" cars. It's always pissed me off when people rant about foreign cars when Americans sell them and Americans service them and Americans sell them the gas to run them. *&^% don't get me started!

Thanks :).

What I find interesting is Toyota's position. The Nissan-Renault move seems to be orchestrated, primarily by one shareholder. They've been talking about this for months. But I think it's a move to get some of the chairs replaced, which of course, nobody at GM wants. If Toyota signs the line, they won't be taking any portion of GM, which I'm sure everyone there would much prefer. I think it's pretty smart on Toyota's part. Good business. Plus they've been sharing platforms for forever, so it makes sense.

Since I have moved away from GM products (Trans Ams and Firebirds) and gone with Honda I have watched GM with some interest as they flounder and make very strange decisions wrt marketing and lack of foresight. For a while I even started to imagine they would go under and thought "well, it's their own fault". However I recently read an article that talked about what would happen if GM did close shop. Who do you think will end up paying for all those retirees and the health car?

If GM went under, the entire automotive industry would seriously weaken. And I mean SERIOUSLY. People are biased like "GM suxxxx, Honda rulezzz", but they fail to realize the consequences in the bigger picture if GM failed.
