Tipping?

Do you guys normally tip the pizza delivery guy? How much? Just curious to see what others think about tipping pizza guys.

I am a shipping engineer of fine italian cuisine, and rely on tips to make money. Being in said field of expertise, I was just curious as to how much/if other people tip.

I see where you are coming from, but in my personal situation I am only paid $4 an hour and depend on getting tips. Most of my fellow drivers and my self consider $1 a stiff which in turn gives the customer the secret sauce on their next pizza. No offense to you at all, just giving a heads up.

LOL, that would do it. We always deliver the food to the better tipper first. I have had as many as 6 deliveries with me at once and the better tippers get their food first.

Aha, let the pizza delivery driver chime in.

We do get compensated for gas. That said, our delivery area is up to 7 miles in radius from the store. That's a 14 mile round trip from the store with gas at $4.70 a gallon here in SoCal.

So, I drive my own car 14 miles round trip and I get 3 bux, while some waiter(which I used to be), makes 4-5 trips from the kitchen to your table and he/she gets 5 or 6 bux on a meal for 2 people. Something stinks here. Here's my formula. And it's assuming the driver is driving his/her own car, not a pizzeria owned delivery vehicle. In that case, you could tip less.

Minimum tip should always be $3 no matter what. If you live more than 3 miles from the store, tip an additional 1$ per mile on top of that. So, if you live 5 miles from the store, you'd tip $5.00. It's that simple. If you have a big order, tip a little extra.

Minimum wage is $5.85 here, I work for a small privately owned place. I think if the store makes less than a certain amount per year they are allowed to pay employees what ever they feel like.

BAd tippers definately get orders last. We leave notes in the CPU on bad tippers that say. "crappy tipper, take it last". Or, for serial bad tippers...we tell them, "Sorry, but due to price of gas, we've revised our delivery area, and you're no longer in it!" It's hard enough to get and keep good drivers, without them getting stiffed when gas is near $5.00 a gallon.

Our delivery radius is about 7 miles as well, but not to mention the occasional out of area delivery as much as 10 miles one way. I agree on $3 being minimum on the tip, $1 or less is always considered a stiff to me.

Do black people tend to not tip in your area? Most of the people that do not tip in mine are black. No I am no racist, it is just what I have experienced in my 2 years of delivering.

It is my first job, everyone has to start somewhere. I won't be attending college till the winter time due to some personal problems. After college hopefully I will be doing something better than delivering, I definitely didn't plan on making a career.

BTW, I made $103 in tips and gas money tonight on 11 deliveries, drove 30 miles in my civic, get $9.50 an hour in wage for 4 1/2 hours. Thats a total of $145.75 in 4.5 hours.
Total $32.38 per hour. 1 1/2 gallons of gas used. I love my job.
