how do you actually get to the game?

do you have to go and download the map and game variant seperately?

You need to download the heroic map pack...that is free now. Once you play it during double EXP weekend you can save and construct the map as you wish.....

not 100% true. Initially yes, but once you play it the map is saved in your previous map menu and can be played later.

A teammate must hammer you up a couple times to allow you to scale the outside wall. Just look for the silver looking wall area in one of the four corners. If done correctly it can work very well.
