XBOX 360 Arcade -> old games pls help

My boy got an XBOX 360 Arcade for Xmas. I just got a 20GB HDD to go with it. Did the update by burning a DVD following instructions here: Xbox.com | How To - How To Get Original Xbox Game Support for Xbox 360

The unit seemed to update & reboot ok. It works normally, but original XBOX games still won't play on it. Am I missing a step? He has tons of games from his original XBOX & most of them are on the list as being supported by this backward compatability update. Or will the XBOX 360 ARCADE version not play the original XBOX games no matter what i do?

BTW, I don't have his console hooked up to go online, so no XBOX live updates

Think you need updates.

You need to get it on the internet (through xbox live). If worse comes to worse, call MS customer support.

Tried that. It updated but still wouldn't play an old game (tried a bunch on the list). Get a new error, but won't launch them. Before it said "error reading disc" now it says "error launching game." or something similar. Tried using the DVD I made after the update & still no luck.

Maybe it's because I have a non-US hard drive for it? Got HDD from eBay. It's an official M$ XBOX360 hard drive, but it has Japanese/Chinese writing/characters when i view it in the XBOX system menu.

Just frustrating & I know nothing about this thing. He has a ton of original XBOX games & hasn't played them since his XBOX died. I thought the 360 would be great for him so he could play his old games on it too.

I really like the Wii much better. I don't have to f__k with it - it just works. And it plays his old gamecube games just fine with no hoops to jump thru. But he likes a lot of his XBOX games more than the Wii/Gamecube games & has about 3 times more of those.

Do you know anyone with one. See if you can borrow their hdd. It is possible it could be the jap. drive.

What games specifically are you trying to play? Some games aren't backwards compatible.

I've tried a bunch of games that are on the list as approved for backwards compatability. Sonic, Spongebob, Incredibles, Amped, Blinx, etc. Tried at least 10 different ones all listed on M$ site as working.

Get the same error every time but it is a different error than what I got before the updates. Before I got "disc not recognized" error when i tried to launch an original game. Now i get the "game can not start. please download the game again" error.

I don't know anyone to borrow a drive from. Would be afraid I'd wipe out all their saved stuff if I did.
