New games look really nice but I find remembering the functions of every button and special move button sequences to take away from the current gaming experience. Perfect modern game system: PS3 graphics, Wii fun factor, 360's Halo 3/game library, HD DVD & BluRay support, and games at no more than $45. |

games are 95% of the time for poseurs now. they like to look at the pretty graphics. if a game doesnt have teh best graphics ever it gets overlooked.
furthermore, back in the day when they had the 'latest and greatest' graphics for games the graphics would be used to improve the gameplay and allow for a new kind of gameplay, such as the original SNES StarFox. nowadays graphics just get in the way of the gameplay and are more just there for the prettyness. things like motion blurring everything, blown out highlights and HDR. |

I always believed that when we first start to game is when the peak of gaming is for most people. I mean, look at Final Fantasy VII. Most people think that FF7 was the pinnacle of classic RPG'ing (mine was FFVIII, tbh), even though it was crap other than the *gasp* Aeris DIES!!!! When I think shooter, I always firstly think Super Contra because it was f'in hard. Now, say shooter, and people will say Halo. It's just the times we are in, and what games we fondly remember.
While I do agree that most games these days appear to be more about what looks good than what plays good, there are games that are still both. Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe (both Clover games, IIRC), Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear Solid, LoZ: Twilight Princess, etc. are both games for gamers and generally look pretty. They're relatively hard, but still of the "next gen" umbrella. Now, they're definitely not games like, Batman (Genesis), Ecco: The Tides of Time, Super Mario 3, and all, but they're all very, VERY good games. I know what you all are saying though. Nothing out is as hard as the first few Contras. And R-Types, and such. Ah well, such is life. |

the newer generation consoles lack the original and creative games that Nintendo and Sega used to have. There are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many first person shooters, racing games that all look the same, and sports games. Sure they look awesome with better graphics, but like all you guys are saying, they lack in the gameplay department.
Whatever happened to RPG's? |

i remember when Final Fantasy 7 came out, gran turismo, metal gear solid on the ps1 and thought they were the best looking games as well as gameplay was top notch. now its all about "eye candy" as most of you have already mentioned.
thats why im considering getting a wii, it may be the weakest in gaming power, but the games they have are ridiculously fun. wario ware being one of them lol. |

That's the other side of the coin. The Wii is definitely ahead in terms of what we can do with controllers. The negative of that is that nearly any game out on the Wii is short, and mostly a mish-mash of mini-games. The only games we know of that is actually a lengthy (and fun) playthrough would be LoZ: Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
Personally, I'd go as far as to say I hated Metroid on the Gamecube, as it was cumbersome to play (you couldn't manual aim unless you held down a button, etc.). However, MP3:C looks very good, in terms of ease of control. The problem is, how to make games good without being too gimmicky. LoZ gets tiring very quickly, considering you actually have to swing your sword and such. All the rest of the games we've owned are mostly friendly, party affairs: Mario Party, WarioWare, Cooking Mama, Rayman, etc. I'm biased towards the PS3 due to three particular games (Ninja Gaiden, MGS4, and FFXIII) but I'd rather get the Wii right now. |

but Sony is just too bad historically. Nintendo is the only one out there who's machine probably wont break down ever. but then PS3 has the most appealing exclusive titles. all the X360 titles are boring or are out for the PC for $20 less with better graphcis (for me) Wii the games just look silly and like you said, the controller seems to get gimmicky after a while and when you jsut want to sit and play games the controller is no good. PS3 has the best controller design, and omg GT5 is a BIG reason. i like Ninja Gaiden and MGS4 idea (you dont want to hear what i think about FF games lol) |

Anyway, I've NEVER had a problem with my PS2s. Or my PSX for that matter. The only reason I ended up buying another PS2 was because I wanted progressive scan. I have the older model (the larger black bulky one) and I use that to pay HD games. Well, I take that back, my first gen PS2 broke down because I thought I could leave it on due to CD reading -- I was wrong though. Burned it out. But that was my fault for leaving it on while I was at school.

My PS2 stopped reading PS1 and Purple disks also. I took it apart and added weight (a penny ) to the small, round piece which rests on top of the disk and the problem went away. No more problems with it after that. The only other complaint I had was that when watching DVD movies it would skip or even stop playing altogether if there was the slightest scratch/smudge/dust spec etc.

seriously, Goldeneye was a huge leap forward as far as multiplayer FPS games, but to say that nothing compares is ignorant, lame, and fanboyish. just 2 years later, the Counter-Strike mod for half life came out which destroys Golden Eye in the multiplayer aspect in almost every way; and the game was made as a Half Life mod by TWO PEOPLE. Then something better than Coutnrer-Strike came and somethign else, adn soemthing else, so Golden Eye was the start of it all but thats it, the start. |
