Type R knob ..weird problem..

Type R knob came in the mail... having trouble installing getting it to stay on tight..im pretty sure i know the problem...my "nylon" threaded insert is made out of Aluminum...

that cant be right...

but im about 100% sure its NOT nylon, i know what nylon screws and fasteners look and feel like.

on the other hand it definetly looks and feels like metal, its light and non magnetic so im assuming its Aluminum...

That's....odd. I've ordered two inserts from them, and they were both nylon. I was actually thinking about changing that insert to a metal-type insert myself, to add more weight.

I've always had to torque down the insert a little bit, because it would stay loose until I did. Look as Jeshua's, and you'll see that little bubble thing that was on mine since I torqued it down a bit more...

the nylon kind of takes the flexes and gets carved and takes the shape of the shifter assembly and thats why it can stay on tight..a metal one wont do that and thats the problem i have..

when the top of the insert touches the top of the knob, you cant tighten anymore. because there is no flex in the metal.

i gave it one final hard (very hard) twist and got a quarter turn out of it, and now its tight but if it breaks, then it will come loose easily, if that makes any sense.

plus i cant orient the logo but thats not a big deal.

Suggest using a non-permanent Loctite thread locking adhesive - since it "might" be Nylon - suggest Loctite 425, it is for plastic and is removable.

If not 425, then another "Blue" removable type - like 242. Give it time to "cure" and it will stay "stuck".

*DO NOT use the red types if you ever want to get the knob off w/o major damage to the knob*

email from TWM...they have replaced Nylon with Aluminum for the inserts..kind of disapointing but i guess its ok. they reccomended adjust the height selector to orient the knob..well i bought the TWM knob because i want the threads as deep as possible..so

i think ill get something malleable yet durable (maybe a BB pellet), and stick it on top of the insert and then compress it enough so that i can orient the knob, maybe later..right now im perfectly content having the logo be about 190ish degrees off.

for future TWM buyers who want to remove your knob: be careful as the Aluminum needs to be tightened much more than Nylon to stay put and likewise does not like to come off the shifter assembly as easily. what i did was wrap a few layers of non skid padding around the insert and break it with a set of pliers, then remove it by hand. thats the only way i can see getting it off without damaging the outer threading.

Exact same thing happened to me ... My TWM is like 97 degrees off. I also had to reef on it pretty hard to get it stuck.

That's really odd that they'd change it suddenly to Aluminum. Maybe too many people were threading the nylon? The hard part about the nylon is that it's almost TOO pliable. I wish I could just sell my thread that came with the knob, but...I want to sell the knob too.

That said, I agree on the loctite, though I was thinking more along the lines of the rubber sealant for PVC. The Skunk2 fix of BB's on the top may work, a rubber stopper sitting on the of the insert will too.

I think that's the only detriment of the Type R, having the logo on top. It's harder to center because of it, while my buddy's A6 always looks good.
