Well, you actually can compresses compressed air (you see this in multiple compressors in series with intercoolers between them, to keep the gas temp from getting to high).

A jet engine provides it own compression (as was been mentioned by Red_Duce). That actually is what a jet turbine does. Without the compression, you basically are just burning kerosene in a lantern...
