DIY-- dropping transmission for installing clutch

ok i didnt do a step by step while i was doing the install so this may be rough. ill do the best i can...

you will have to refer to this thread before you start any of this to remove the subframe....thanks to blueroadster
DIY 2006 SI Turbo Related: Subframe & Oil Pan Removal/Installation (PIC Heavy)

drain the tranny fluid

the intermediate shaft has a bracket with 3 bolts on it on mounted on the back of the engine...you take those 3 bolts out....leave the passenger side axle in the intermediate shaft and just take the shaft out of the transmission....but you have to pop the drivers side out of the transmission

ok to start to drop the tranny youll need to take the whole shifter cable assembly off the transmission....take out the bushings and then the 3 bolts holding it on

you need to disconnect the clutch fluid line from the slave cylinder

disconnect this ground along with this mount for the clutch fluid line

dont forget the VSS (its under the upper radiator hose)

now the tranny mount.....its tricky....take out the bolts indicated here:

now one of those^is actually the ecu holddown bracket.... but you need to move it to get to the other bolts....so the other bolt to the computer holddown bracket is underneath and behind the ecu...

next theres 3 bolts holding the mount down to the frame on the drivers side:

take off this sensor

take off the bellhousing bolts...i think theres 8....and THEY ARENT ALL THE SAME SO KEEP THEM ORGANIZED

and after the install you will have to refer to here to put fluid back in the tranny thanks to batang city jail

Nice job...+ rep.

As a tip, you do not need to disconnect the hardline going to the slave cylinder. If you remove the two bolts, you can swing it out of the way without losing any fluid.

Regarding the eight bolts, I believe that is the right number securing the bellhousing to the block (one of these bolts goes through the starter bracket, into the block and into the transmission bellhousing). In addition, the front motormount will need to be removed as its three bolts has connecting points on the block and transmission.

Other than that, a transmission jack helps to make the removal and installation easier.

No worries...To add to the first post where you linked to my thread regarding the subframe, there are only a few more nuts and bolts that need to be removed to completely remove the subframe itself. There are three on each side where the lower control arm connects to the wheel assembly on each side. Make sure that you support the steering rack with bungee cords, wire, straps or whatever you have before removing the subframe (easy to do if you have a strut tower bar installed). If the rack falls too low, then you'll end up screwing up the EPS unit to where it will throw a code that only the dealer can correct. I did not experience this, but read on another post on this forum that it can happen and this is evidently the one code that only the dealer can fix.

And another thing...Before you remove the motor mount on the transmission, you must also ensure that the engine itself is braced. You can either use a jack from below, straps from above, or a combination.

I also removed both axles and then the intermediate shaft. You have to use a pry bar to get the axle out of the intermediate shaft on one side and out of the transmission on the other side. When you reinstall them, make sure that the axles are fully seated. When you push them in, you will feel the metal ring on the end of the shaft click into place. At that point, they are not fully seated so you will have to push the axle in about another inch...If you look at the clearance before removal, it will make since once you reinstall the axles.

Would this same procedure work replacing your flywheel with a lightweight aluminum unit?
And is it difficult to do?

I've done it on a Honda Accord and VW passat (major pita). Accord was way easier than the vw.
