1. Is compatible and responsive to push email

It has full POP/IMAP e-mail built in with an autocheck interval (not exactly push), but the new OS due out in... a week or so? has full Exchange Active Sync support (Think blackberry e-mail, without all of your data going through their networks and systems).

2. Easy to browse teh intarwebz

Mobile Safari renders just like Safari on a Mac or PC. has pinch zoom and double tap zoom functionality which makes browsing pretty easy on a small device. Only downfall is no flash plugin (yet?)

3. Easy to use it for instant messaging & texting (I have never done either on my current phone because it is such a P.I.T.A)

Texting works great on it and is fully threaded much like an IM session though it doenst support media messaging (I think it can e-mail you a media message sent to you but I dont use them anyway, I e-mail). No native IM clients, but the update next week is opening the platform up to outside developers and I expect to see some. TECHNICALLY you can hack third party software onto it and there's some ok IM apps there, I expect to see better with the SDK release.

4. Easy to use as a modem for a computer (fast enough for average browsing)

Unfortunately they haven't added this functionality. The current model is using EDGE which isn't the but works for basic browsing. The phone includes WIFI to make up for it when available though. I've read using third party hacks and command line utilities you can bridge the connection (very unsupported) but I haven't tested it.

5. Easy and fast to go between different functions (aim, email, phone, internet, ect)

Check.

6. Preferably a compact design

Check.

7. Easy to take pictures and upload them (if it can upload to photobucket direct, so much the better)

Photos are cake. 2.0mp. You can e-mail photos directly from it (which may allow some sort of interface with sites like photobucket or flikr, though I havent looked into it much).

8. Must have some kind of QWERTY keyboard

on screen QWERTY. Takes some getting used to, but once you are, it is IMO much better than those little blackberry chicklet keyboards.

9. If it is friendly to public development (open source, ect) so much the better.

Sortof. A lot of hacked unsupported third party/open source development going on right now. When the SDK is released there will be a lot of official third party development going on.

Extra.

And of course you're getting a good MP3/AAC and Video player as well as a Youtube browser, Google Maps interface that has mock GPS locating, and the usual smartphone suites (calendar, contacts, notes etc etc).

Nokia N95 8GB

Positives
-8GB internal memory
-5MP camera
-loud speakers
-video ringtones
-view interface vertically or horizontally with dual slider design
-can use wireless router to connect to internet/GPS
-has a phone strap hole (a absolute must-have for me hehe)
-clear voice chat, sounds like it has a noise-canceling feature

Negatives
-interface navigation moves a bit sluggish
-no flashlight feature, even though it has a very bright flash on camera
-camera takes a couple seconds more than a regular camera to take a picture
-and there is no stabilization on still pictures

I hate it when it goes silent by itself from being in my pocket... My friends always get mad at me, thinking I don't pick my phone up on purpose. FACK RAZRs! Can't wait to get a new phone. :dancingcool smiley:

Samsung Instinct =)

Brand new and hits market 2morrow and had it 2days =)

Its not an Iphone killer but a strong competitor to it.

Comes with spare battery and external battery charger and included 2gb microSD card. Even comes with a nice case.

Plus they everything plan is mad awesome. 100bucks a month for unlimited everything. Data, txt, gps, minutes, everything

but I get discounted rate so its like 78 for me

other than that, I had the curve and got rid of it in few days for this phone. Been waiting for it forever but my damn razr gave out so needed new phone and curve was AWESOME but gave it to my mother as a gift when I got this.

I have a palm treo 700p

If you sling it around, open source literally spills out

you can use the cradle (comes with the phone) and pdanet to use the phone as an interwebz antenna

full qwerty keyboard

I've never used aim or anything on it, but it keeps text messages in a chat log that very closely resembles an instant message log, and I've heard that im programs run well on it.

Has an external memory slot for sd cards. Makes it really easy not only to transfer info back and forth (if you choose not to use the cradle), but it means that no matter what I have an sd card on me. I swap it back and forth between my phone/camera quite often.

The interwebs is broadband speeds generally, a big plus (especially when you're bored in class )

The lag between programs is there, but not all the time.

The oddity ~ it seems to lag really badly when I text one single person. I used to think that it was other verizon customers in general, but no.. just one person. Quite a few times I've had to reset it due to the insane lag when texting that one person. I don't understand it and it drives me nuts.

Oh, biggest plus ever.. You can download/install the original dope wars (mp3 player and ringtones also, but what phone doesn't have that now?)

This reminds me.. You can also download and install a google app for the treo that gives not only gps functionality, but live traffic updates too. I've used it more than once to dodge traffic jams.

Also, the internet is quick enough on it to pull up youtube without a problem. I rickrolled 3 classes at once with this feature.

It cant take pictures easily, however dont use sprint if you wanna send picture texts (for some reason they dont allow u to send it, only recieve)

To make it easier, set one of the side buttons to activate the camera after you hold it for 2 seconds. That's what I did to make sure that whenever I needed to snap a picture with a quickness I could (many posts in the rice thread later, I love it).
The only thing that I really dislike about this phone is the terrible camera (1.3 mp) and the lack of flash. MMS messaging is quick and easy to do though, so whatever. :shrugs:
