Anyway....I'm looking to upgrade my memory in my desktop. I currently have 1GB of DDR memory and have 2 more open slots. I'm thinking about getting an extra gig by replacing the two 512k DDR cards with two 1GB cards. Now I saw a bunch of different options when I looked at memory and I'm not sure what i should get. Can I get DDR2 cards and install them or does it have to be DDR? Also...I noticed there are different types of 1GB DDR & DDR2 cards...which type would be the best?

My current PC is an HP with the AMD 64 duo processor.

Any help is appreciated.
yea, Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com is the best. If you could, find my computer, right click on it and select properties then @ the bottom where it says computer:, tell us what is says, or post screenshot.

DDR ram. 400MHz FSB so you want 400MHz ram, which is PC3200. For manufacturers, I reccommend Kingston, Mushkin, Corsair or Patriot.

thanks for all the help earlier guys....I got 2 1gb PC3200 memory cards...I left the old ones in there too so now it's bumped up to 3gb of RAM. This is what the computer really needed...so much faster now.

I completely forgot about this thread

I ended up just transferring as many files as I could (mostly just images, which aren't likely to have viruses attached) to my laptop and just doing a full restore on the desktop. I still need to clean it out a bit considering all that b/s that came on the computer is back on it again, but it's virii free and runs great again.

Sorry about that...

I've been wanting to build a PC since it's cheaper but I don't really know where to start. The main problem for me is the OS (and just putting it together even though I know it's like legos lol). Vista is like $250+ for the "system builder"...I have a Vista Ultimate 64bit Recovery DVD from my HP laptop...could I "install" that to a blank PC?

Things I am looking for:

-AMD X2 6400+ (would like Phenom 9850 if price is right..)
-New fan for CPU
-6GB 800MHz (1066Mhz if reasonable price with motherboard)
-nVidia EVGA 9800GTX 512MB
-Atleast 500GB HD
-Creative Labs SE sound card
-Motherboard: Depends on ram speed...

I'm assuming a 600W PS would be needed for this...?

EDIT:

I have put together a PC on NewEgg. If anyone would like to help me with this, I can send you an email with all the contents and you can look it over for me. I'd appreciate it!

maybe you computer wizzes can help me out with a very annoying little problem I've been having with my T61 running vista. If I try putting the computer to sleep, 75% of the time the screen goes black and the computer just hangs so I have to turn it off and on again. Its so annoying because I like to put my computer to sleep when I won't be using it for a while but this problem forces me to leave it running or shut it down.

Could be you don't have enough RAM to run Vista efficiently. If you have the regular T61 (1GB DDR2-5300) then that could be the problem. I'm running Vista Ultimate with 4GB DDR2-6400 and have no problems.

Don't keep me to this since I'm not an expert but the more the RAM you have the better off you are. Even with a slow CPU.

I upgraded to 2gb of ram right after I bought it and most people say that 2gb is good enough to run vista so thats likely not the issue, I have been looking to upgrade to 3gb though since ram is so cheap now.

About a month ago the sleep function was working perfectly (zero hangs) for about a week and then it started doing it again. I hadn't changed anything hardware or software wise when this happened so I dunno what could be responsible.

is the vista on a laptop or desktop, if on both, check bios settings, cuz you need to tell the screen to come back on after it goes to sleep. It happened to me too; just go into bios (different for everybody, mostly likely del or something) and go to sleep options.

^^ Sounds like there could be an application conflict causing it to hang... It could be an essential Vista component or it could be something you've installed. Worth checking out though.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Do you have some sort of power management software installed? It's very possible that it's just being buggy in general and not applying its settings properly. If you do have this software installed you can try to disable it and apply the settings within manually and see if you still have the same problem. If so you might be able to uninstall/reinstall and solve your issues.

As NcA said, there might just be a process that's not halting when the computer is supposed to enter into hibernate, which would keep it from hibernating and possibly causing it to freeze at times.

I think I may have fixed it. I was googling the problem and came across this page Vista won't go to Sleep - Vista Help. So after following the guys advice and changing the "multimedia settings" and the "usb selective suspend settings" its been going to sleep properly every time. I guess it was some kind of an application conflict like firmhonda and NcA said. Now that I've changed those settings its fine and it takes much less time to enter sleep also . Thanks for your input guys.

I need help mounting an ISO file. I'm using ISOrecorder to try and burn an ISO file but it keeps ejecting the CD saying something about the speed of the file isn't fast enough for the media (Sorry, it probably isn't what it actually said but those are the key words). I tried using both a CD and a DVD but it does the samething. How do I mount this ISO file?

Do you need to actually burn the ISO to take a disc with you somewhere? If not, try using Daemon tools or Alcohol 120, these will allow you to create a virtual drive and mount an ISO without having to burn it. Alternatively, you can try adjusting the burn speed settings, but without the exact phrase of the error I can't get more specific. Are you trying to burn a CD or a DVD ISO file?
