I probably should add that I am going to the university of Toledo and will be in the pharmacy program. I have always used pc's and would kind of like to have a MacBook. Games aren't too important too me and I will be living there. I know you can install windows on it, but will every program work on the mac?I have asked the school and they said they support both macs and pcs.

^To add on to that.. Yes, if you dualboot xp on the mac you will be fully compatible with anything that's out there that's made for xp. What you're doing is essentially just installing 2 operating systems on one computer and when you boot up you'll just choose which one that you want. The only downside is that xp generally doesn't get along with being the 2nd OS installed on a system, but it doesn't always give problems.
I personally not only have Fedora and xp pro set up on my laptop, but I also have fedora running on a virtual machine so that I can just load it up while running xp and have a bit of fun while still being able to run any xp programs at the same time (unless I'm in fullscreen mode in fedora). The only problems that I've had so far are: 1) I can't find the driver for my wireless card for fedora (dualboot) 2) I can't get fedora to open the files on my flash drive (VM)

Well I don't have any problems whatsoever with the OS itself, I just can't find the drivers for my network card with the dualboot. With the virtual machine it just feeds off of the existing drivers so there's no problems whatsoever, except I can't get to my files on my flash drive. It's really odd too because I've accessed the flash drive through the VM, but for some reason it just won't show any of my files. Sucks too because I have a couple of nice wallpapers that would look fantastic on linux.

i don't honestly get whats so cool about macs.
last time i looked into it they were faster than pcs and im sure they still are and people sware that they love them. i wouldnt mind going mac i would just like to understand what s so cool about them. my sister had one and she was continually told she had to go the nearest apple store to get it fixed. everyone said macs dont have viruses, well she got one. then once u get to the apple store u better hope u made an appt with a "mac genius". lol. its definately the fad right now and it seems once u go apple they have u by the balls. everybody is so excited that office is on macs now, big deal its been on pc for how long now? lol can someone please explain to me. i would just like to know what the point is in mastering an entirely different operating system and having to deal with compatibility of this and that. btw whats the deal with running windows xp and mac os at the same time? is it the free ipod when u buy a laptop? |

Im gonna get a mac because I like the design and where apple is trying to go with the functionality of their interface. The multitouch pad thats in the macbook air which will probably be put into the other macbooks sooner or later is a great idea which windows pc's havent come out with yet. Not only that but since apple started to use intel processors it also has made it easier to troubleshoot, as for going to a mac genius thats up to whoever owns it, either you go there or if you had a windows based pc you would have to go to a geek squad or somesort of pc repair place too. And Office has been on Mac for quite some time, its been on pc for longer because the guys who make windows also make office, so you can see how that would work out for them.

I know you didn't say that you were going to get it or anything, I just wanted to make that plea before you spent your money. I'm not saying to not get a Mac, if that's what you think you'd like better then by all means go right on ahead, but if I can stop just 1 person from waisting their money on the MBA then I know that I've done a good thing. ![]() Care to share why?

Yet again, care to share why? This thread was originally intended to educate someone that was in the market for a laptop. Simply saying "Apple all the way" isn't going to teach them anything and therefor isn't going to persuade them into buying an Apple machine.

Yea I like a dedicated GPU but seeing as I stopped playing games on my laptop and I have a desktop for that job. I decided going smaller would be better. I really just am holding out for that touchpad feature which I have yet to see implemented better anywhere else.

I personally just think the regular MacBook is a bit too overpriced for what it is. An entry level MacBook is equipped with a:
2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo / 1 Gigabyte of memory / 120 Gigabyte HDD (5400 RPM) / Intel GMA 950 Integrated Graphics For the same price, I got an XPS M1330 with: 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo / 3 Gigabytes of memory / 250 Gigabyte HDD (7200 RPM) / nVidia 8400 GPU And yes, I've actually owned two MacBooks in the past.

So I have decided to go with the black macbook. I am going to hold off a bit before buying it because there seem to be rumors that a macbook refresh is going to be released soon. I am also going to get VMware Fusion and windows xp to solve any compatibility issues I may come across. I am also buying a incase neoprene sleeve and a lock for my macbook. Is there anything else I need or I am forgetting? Also, I was thinking about bumping the ram up to 4gb because I will be using fusion. I know I will get better performance, but is it really worth it to upgrade to 4gb?
