Girl get Mac back.......

Here's a little story for you: An Apple Store employee had a party in her apartment. A couple weeks later her place was cleared out to the tune of about $5,000 worth of electronics, including her new Mac. Days later, a friend sees that she's online and alerts the Mac's rightful owner. Since she was running Leopard with Back to My Mac, owner-girl logged in remotely and activated Photo Booth via the screen-share function. And what do you know, it turned out that the thieves were some "friends" who were at the party a few weeks back. She took the photos to the cops and -- voila -- busted! The thieves, Edmon Shahikian, 23, and Ian Frias, 20, both of the Bronx, have been charged with second-degree burglary and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Go go crafty nerdy girl!http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/10/ny...=1&oref=slogin

err..could have been easier to track the MAC address..(which would work with any internet abled device) but whatever worked.
that feature actually seems as though it could be exploited for means of surveillance/invasion of privacy.
everyone with a Mac, you could be being watched right now.

MAC address tracing would have been nearly impossible from my understanding. They're primarily used on local networks and subnets for switches to properly route packets within the LAN (basically Layer 2 switches), not across the internet (Layer 3 routers). They aren't passed out of the LAN by the router (IP addressing is used instead). If MAC address tracking was simpler like that you could track a person by their MAC address anywhere in the world and the RIAA and MPAA would have a lot easier time with their lawsuits (assuming that MAC addresses were truly unique, which they aren't).

Very clever way to track the thieves down none the less. Too bad Back-To-Mac is part of .Mac and not really worth the money in most cases unless you get it free working for Apple

You actually have to write down the MAC address. The manufacturer of the computer doesn't keep record of those. (Most people don't write it down.) Also, if the computer was on a NAT enabled router (after it was stolen and you actually had the MAC), you would never be able to find the MAC over the internet. (You could find the MAC of the router, but that wouldn't help)
