Some computer help plz
Anyways my dad brought me some computer to repair for his friend and get an upgrade.
Long story short: theres nothing wrong with the computer, it ran perfectly....and the upgraded he wanted was a DVD burner. Anyways I put in the DVD burner and now for some fcken reason when I boot the computer nothing is detected!?!?? No hard-drives no dvd burner, no dvd drive nothing! Any help here!?! This thing is a bit older 2000ish...all hard drives are IDE.....could it be the jumpers? I disconnected both optical drives just to see if I can get a hard drive to boot but still nothing!?! any help is appriciated Thanks |

Start off with just having the hard drive hooked up and get that reconized. Get into the BIOS, most have a auto setting that should find the hard drive. The hard drive that has the operating system installed should either be set to cable select or master and be the first drive on the IDE chain. After you get that then add each other device one by one until you find your failure. Adjust that devices jumper settings if needed, cable select, slave, etc. Some older mother boards may not like cable select when more then 1 device is connected.

This is retarded........Ok theres 2 hard drives in there (not sure which one has the OS) and I tried both on primary master and #1 on IDE chain and I tried every goddam jumper setting and still the OS wouldn't load from either!
There's no way the OS got deleted or anything I just put in a goddam dvd burner for christ sake! I'm so angry right now!! |

That really sucks man! Does the BIOS even pick up that the hard drives are there? Are they getting power? Can hear them spin up when you power the PC?
If you want to know where the OS is installed you can slave the hard drives in another system so you can browse thier contents look for the windows folder or boot files, autoexe.bat, config.sys, etc. I keep a USB to IDE/SATA adapter handy for things like that. |
