I think the philips units with the AmbiLights are really cool. I have a 37" LCD with them. Its the type of thing you love or hate though depending on the person.

Yeah Philips! Those rule! So much that they couldn't sell enough to stay profitable and have sold the line to Funai. Therefore, soon there will be no more Philips. Darn.
OP - Tell me why you want 1080p. How far away do you sit from the screen and what all are you going to play on it? What sources? |

I just got the Samsung LN40A550 40 in. from circuitcity for 1499.99 with a free xbox360 pro. I've had the tv for less than a week, so no cons. The graphics are great and it has a 30000:1 contrast ratio, making the sony bravia with only 16000:1 c.r. look rough.

definitely does, if you compare "stats." If you look at the picture, you'll see how exaggerated the 30k:1 is rated. Kind of like their new Plasmas with a million to one CR. Please...
Next, let's race some cars on paper. That'd be cool! |

i honestly didnt like the plasmas i was seeing...the colors were good, but the screens were just too dark for my preference. seriously though, the sony looked rough. the sony's colors seemed to streaked more than the samsung, while the samsung had more truer colors.

Play with the settings on the TVs at the store. We had a cheapy Olevia HDTV (my wife killed it with a dog toy though...) and in the store it looked like crap at first because they hadn't adjusted it. Looked great at home for the price, speakers sucked, but the display was fine.
I'd definitely recommend the Samsung if you've got the money for it. More expensive than most for the size but EXCELLENT displays. |
