American Apparel to track its clothing with RFID
American Apparel to track its clothing with RFID : Ben Patterson : Yahoo! Tech This is kind of scary. They have such lame reasons for using this chip. I dont believe the reasons given since they say the the chip would remain in the clothing even after being puchased. Im sure this isnt the 1st product with this chip in it and it wont be the last.

How do those chips stand up to the permanent press cycle?
Otherwise I say find it and remove it, take a hammer and beat every square inch of your sweater until you're sure it has been smashed to bits, zap your clothes with a homemade EMP from a camera's flash, or wrap your clothing inside and out with aluminum foil. Some suggest RFID's are the biblical mark of the beast. Other say in studies they cause tumors. And a select few implant them in their hands! Last edited by Gonzo; 04-18-2008 at 12:05 PM. |

American Apparel
They sell kind of plain clothes, and are considered "urban style". They also print band t-shirts and stuff like that, but do not sell those through their stores. All of the stores are in big cities (Atlanta, New York, LA, etc.) I imagine the RFID tags will be inside of other tags on the clothes that will be easy to remove. It's not yet possible for RFID circuits to be integrated into the threads of clothing. This isn't a conspiracy, or the mark of the best, it's just a company using technology to make inventory management easier and save money. Also, theft should be reduced through the use of RFID tags as well. I would imagine AA is pretty easy to steal from. Last edited by FGJake; 04-18-2008 at 12:54 PM. |

It's nothing to worry about. Even when they start selling clothing with the chips permanently attached it's still not going to be an issue. Those little RFID "chips" are the same things that you can get implanted in your pets with a shot. They are about the size of a small grain of rice and only transmit a serial number when an appropriate reading device is placed within inches of it and energises it. These things aren't going to be beaming out your location out like a tracking beacon once you leave the store. It's like one of those stickey things with the metal in them put on cd's and even integrated into price tags as a theft deterrant but more advanced.
But, would I take it out anyways? Yeah. You will be able to feel it so it's probrably going to be in a seam or inside the collar or something. |
