Whatever you want to call them... G3, G4, Macbook; its all the same.

Logic board failures for everyone I've seen used.

Yeah... thats pretty much ANY notebook computer. Thats why they call them notebooks and not laptops. They aren't designed to be used on your lap. They're designed to function with a solid surface below them to provide air flow. My wife roasted her old dell that way (she used to set it on her bed and lap). Guess where the intake fan was? directly in the center of the bottom of the machine.

A computer's a computer. Most of the hardware is identical, and just as likely to fail regardless of manufacturer. A lot of those failures are the fault of the user (though manufacturers cover them anyway as long as its not obvious abuse, dont we wish auto manufacturer's were this trusting?).
generally speaking, but specifically it comes down to actual parts used.

this is a specific problem - the heat off the bottom.

for example, using magnesium alloy machines send a small electric current (or vibration) along its surface. My last sony had it completely and I opened about 5 in the store before finding one that didn't really do it.

So far 2 out of my 3 sony laptops and a few others I've owned have never had any heat issues on the bottom - i can keep them on my lap for hours - or, leave it on all day and stick it on my bare legs (yes shorts haha). The Mac's you can't even do it after 10 min.
