...but I have to stand by my opinion that to pay that much for something that gets outperformed in almost every way by something that costs less than half as much is nothing short of price gouging aimed at those people that are insane enough to pay for it just because it's an apple...

I think that ALL of Apple's machines really have at least a niche market that they are justifiable in just as about every PC the PC manufactuerers make is. And I've done it already in another thread, so I wont do it again, but there are PC's that the MBA is feature and price comparable with. You simply arent going to cram hardware into a case that tiny and not pay more for it. Thats what the Macbook is for

There are ways that Macs OS is better than windows, but again, for your general user it means nothing at all. That means that an Apple when compared to a PC of equal price generally is no better in any way for your normal user... But Apple fans all-out refuse to acknowledge this and continue to act as if their **** doesn't stink because Steve Jobs fixed the smell for them.

From a just your every day get on and browse the web, check facebook, play around in IM kind of person, yeah it's not really going to make a difference (well other than the whole virus and spyware thing, but that could easily change, I've been using Macs long enough to remember when we had malicious viruses and had to run scanners too). And there are flaws with Apple's machines/OS and they do have major flops (hell I own two of them, a G4 Cube and a Macintosh Color Classic

). But that doesn't mean that Apple lacks a target audience for its products that you aren't a part of (MBA is a very good example). A vast majority of computer users arent the target audience for that machine. And as such Im sure not a lot of them will sell. How many Sony Vaio TZ series laptops do you see around? same market segment.

Oh god, consider yourself lucky to only run into the Mac ones. It's far worse when you have to deal with the Mac, Windows, Linux AND BSD ones that can't POSSIBLY see any real use for anything but their own OS/hardware configuration. Many of them give me the desire to lodge a pencil deep in the death center of their brain (and in the event that fails, my own brain).
