IS Honda really advancing their engines??

I like the R18, i own one, i love the SI civic as well, heck , i love the entire honda/acura line up.
But....
If i remember correctly, didnt the Bseries honda engines start at 140HP up to 170 then 190 for the type R, this was back in 1990 i beleve, so about 15 years ago. Now, doesnt the mighty 1.8R18 also have only 140HP??
To add insult to injury, the Integra with the base model Bseries engine was quicker to 0-60 and the quartermile, then the 06 civic.
Now, moving on we have the current civic HYBRID, gettting 40MPGup to 45in some cases, but remember the little 1988CRX HF? That bad boy was advertised to get 50MPG and it did! I had one and got 700KMS every single fillup, and that was with less then 45L of fuel. So all in all, are we really advancing, or are we just changing the way we think about cars.

Lets see horsepower question: Honda builds economy cars called civics. They want efficiency in areas of fuel and emmissions, not horsepower. That's why they have the SI model. For people that want more horsepower.

Hybrid vs CRX: Hybrid weighs a lot more. Has double the HP. 110 vs. 58. Emmisions standards have changed since then. Safety feature such as airbags and sturdier frames, electronics, etc weigh the car down. If you crash in a crx you pretty much die. Mopeds get great gas mileage but people don't want to drive them to work.

New cars are heavy.

200 Hp from a NA 4 banger is still good. 4 stroke engines are not that efficient. Only about 25% of the energy in gas is turned into power. The rest is waste heat out of the exhaust and radiator.

If we could get 80% efficiency out of an engine of some sorts then the mileage and power would be incredible.

Advances in the engine don't necessarily mean HP. 140 HP now is just as good as it was 5 years ago, and will most likely be sufficient in 5 years as well. The important thing is that efficiency is improved while maintaining or increasing the HP.

yes they are working on a continously variable cam timing and lift sytem like BMW has. its gonna be funny when you can buy a 20k civic and get that kind of stuff and a Ferrari will still have a 2 step method.
